Gentlemen:
This letter is written on behalf of ~rs. Lillian M. Hawkins of this Oity. On De-
ce~oer 16, %~ the heirs of the late Sarah E. Hoffler executed and delivered a deed to Mrs.
Lillian M. Hawkins, widow, conveying a certain piece of oroperty located at 2239 Glasgow St.,
Portsmouth, Virginia. Mrs. Hawkins is now canting for th~ husband of the late Sarah E. Her-
flor, Thomas A. Hoffler, who has been incapacitated for the last ten years and bedridden for
the last four years. The property referred to above is used as a residence where Mrs. Haw-
kins lives with her two children and cares for Mr. Thomas~A. Hof~ler. The taxes on the afore-
said property have not been paid for the~years 1~25, ~926, 1927, 1~28, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1~3~.
The amount of these taxes, interest and penalties is $15~.60.
Mrs. Hawkins desires to have the deed admitted to record but she is not able to
pay the delinquent taxes. The property in question is located on Glasgow Street near the old
school house %hat is now being demolished, it is in a run down condition and would not in my
opinion bring even the amount of the taxes at a sale. This property was conveyed to Mrs. Haw-
kins as a gift, and it means a place over her head in these trying times. Mme. Hawkins has
made arrangements whereby a loan will be made to her by a friend of a small amount of money
to be used in paying the taxes if some compromise can be effected. In the event that the coun-
cil may see fit to take some action in the matter I desire tO m~ggest as follow~: That the pen-
alties and interest be remitted and that the remaining taxes due be reduced to 50% she can ar-
range to pay same by this loan from the friend mentioned above. If worse should come to worse
and the property sold there is no doubt but that Mr. Hoffler wou~d become a public charge on
the Oity. -
This matter has come to my attention from the Disabled American Veterans of the
World War and my services in the premises are without compensation of any nature whatsoever.
I will be glad to aopear before the Oouncil at any time to go into the matter further if they
so desire. -
Very truly yours,
