Works Service Admini- <br />stration and in pursuance of its Recovery Program, has made available_the se~viees of skilled <br />workers for public works and the money with which to pay t~hem'~t makes ne appropriatiom <br />the purchase of materials~and supplies necessary to carry cut the proJects on which these <br />people are employed, and <br /> [~aEAS, as of the first day of J~nuary~933, the City, umder the recommenda- <br />tion of the Clerk of th~'~Court or'Hustings; adopted-for ~rent indexing of deeds the system <br />of general indexing known as the Permaflex System; and, <br /> ~P~REAS,~ the general indexes to deeds prior to January i, 1933, constitute nine- <br />teen separate books which occupy a large space in the Clerk's office, are unwieldy, are in some <br />instances much worn and impaired, all of which make it very difficult for the examination and <br />searching of titles and records to real estate thoroughly and expeditiously; <br /> WHEREAS, the said books are ~n such condition that their replacement will be a <br />matter of necessity in a .r~ason~ly short space of time which would entail a large expense of <br />about $6000.00; 'AS , <br /> WHERE , the installation of said indexes will be largely a matter of labor the <br />funds for which have already been secured by Wm. Hodge$ Baker, Clerk of the Court of Hustings, <br />to the extent of approximately $5000.00, which will give employment to au average of thirty- <br />five persons per day over a considerable teng~h of time; and, <br /> WHEREAS, the land books in the office of the Clerk of the Court of Hustings are <br />in a deplorable condition being badly mutilated and in many instances illegible and many pages <br />of which are missing and .i~ is the purpose of the ~lerk to re~air and~estore these books; <br /> WHEREAS, ~he map book in the office of the Clerk of khe Court of Hustings is <br />likewise in very Bad condition smd needs to be restored, and it ia the purpose of the Clerk to <br />restore the map book aud to replace same wXth more du~able booka; and <br /> WHEREAS, lhe only record of births and deaths in the City of Portsmouth from the <br />year 1858 to 1896 is in the office of the Clerk of the Court of Hustings and whereas said records <br />by reason of age are badly mutilated and, if to be pTese~Ved, must he rewritten at once; and <br /> WHEREA~, ~in order for the City to avail itsel£ of the appzopriation.of $5,000.00 <br />above referred to, and at the same time give employment to a large number o~ women, it will be <br />necessary fo~ it to provide the material necessary ~or said project~ which will require an ex- <br />penditure ~ $900.00. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE ~T RESOLVED by the Portsmouth and ~erfolk County Ba~ Associa- <br />t ion~ in meeting assembled, that it approves of and appreciates the necessity of this work and <br />feels that-this is an opportunity which the City should avail itaelf to have ~his work done amd <br />hereby respectfully request the Council of the City of Portsmouth to appropriate the money nec- <br />essary to buy the books and mmte=ials,~e~c~, ~o=suoh projects which they are advised will be <br />$900.00. <br /> The above is a copy of the resolution unanimously adopted by the-Portsmouth and <br />Norfolk County Bar Assooia~en at a special me?img ~eld in the court room of the Court of Hust- <br />ings for the City of Portsmouth on JanuamTy 8t~, 1~3~. <br /> <br />.
