"226 Webster Avenue,
May 8th, 193~.

Mr. H.B2 Anderson,
Oity Manager,
Portsmouth, Va.

Dear Sir:
I am inclosing an artic~ which appeared in last Sunday"s Portsmouth Star in
the hope that you will present the facts before the Oouncil for their consideration.

Yours very truly,

(Signed) Mrs. Joseph Augustus Rawles.,

The following communication from the Oity Attorney was read:

"At your meeting of April 10th you referred to me a request from Mary Eo Liggan
"to reduce the a~sessment and relieve a portion of the taxes, en the property number 1021 and
1023 Oounty Street.
The Oity Oouncil has no right to reduce the assessment on any property, a~d as
to this part of the raquest I recommend that it be not granted.
I find. he, ever, that the building on the land has been removed. This was ap-
parently done in 193i amd not in 1929 as stated in Miss Liggan, s letter. No permit was ever
issmed for the destruction of the building, but from the correspondence of the former Building
Inspector the building appears to have been removed in August or September, 1931. The asses-
sors also fo.un~ the building on the lan~ in 1930 and reduced the value from $2500. to $~000.
The taxes wh~ca were assessed on the building for the years 1932, 1933 and 193~, amountzng to
the s~m of $26.50 for each of these years, should be relieved, and I so recommend,,

On motion of I~v. Brooks, the recommendation of the Oity Attorney was concurred in.
