Gentlemen:
You requested me, upon the occasion of our meeting wi th yon on the evening of
November 2?th, that we submit, in w~iting, the Company's proposal.relative to the complete
substitution of bus for street railway service in Portsmouth.
. This company.recognizes that wherever practicable, more modern urban transpor-
tation is be~D~ provided by the substitution of buses for street cars. It has consistently
followed this policy whenever conditions would permit, and in the case of Portsmouth, desires
to make the following proposal:
The Comoany will convey title to the City to all tracks in the streets as well
as title to any right~ of way we may own, on which ottr tracks are located within the Oity lim-
its of Portsmouth, reserving the right on any orivate rights of way which may be conveyed to
the City, to operate its electric lines on such rights of way. The tracks are to be the pro-
perty of the City of Portsmout~ for such disoosition as the. City may care to make of them.
We will agree, at our expense, to take down the overhead trolley li~s end re-
move within the City limits all poles which are used exclusively for railway service.
In consideration o f the Oity's assumption of responsibility for the tracks under
this plan and. our receiving authority to operate, as noted abo~e, an all bus service, we will
after the passage of tke appropriate Ordinances in form to be agreed upon between the City and
the Company; ~pon'the execution, of the necessary'papers involved; and upon receipt of approval
of the State uorporation Commission oermitting us to substztute bus service in the Oounty for
the stree~ railway service ncw being ~urnished on the Cradock Line, pay to the Treasurer of the
City of Portsmouth the sum of $65,000,
Yours very truly,
