In our own partioular:~ase, a change in the routing of buses will prove aetr!-
mental to our business.
In opening our pharmacy at 232 High Street, the present bus stop at the North-
east corner Of Middle and High ets., was an important factor in the selection of ou~ store
site. To obtain our advantageous store location, it was necessary for us to pay a "location
rental". Our sales to waiting street car and bus passengers aggregate for us the dif-

ference between profit and loss. the
,A~ a meeting of the General 0ommittee of the Portsmouth Memorial Day Oelebra-
tion Oommittee, organized for the p~.vp,se of formulating plans ~nd carrying out the Annual
Exercises to be held in this Oity on May ~Oth, I was directed, as Ohairman of the ~inance Oom-
mittee, to seek from the 0ity Oouncil an aooropriation to help ~th~ 0ommittee in defraying the
expenses incident to the celebra~io? Her~ofore, the expenses have been bourne almost en-
tirely by certain Veteran organizations Of the Oity.
Participating in the exercises, in addition to Oivic organizations, and units
from the military naval establishments in this vicinity, are the Veterans of Foreign~ars and
Ladies~ Auxiliar4es,-American Legion and its auxiliaries, Spanish American~ War Veterans and
auxilLa~Y, Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons and Daughters of the 0onfeder-
ate Veterans, Fleet Reserve Associations ~d auxiliaries, and numerous other, civic and patrio-
tic organizations and officialS. In snot , this event is a Oity affair in which every patrio-
Tic citizen should feel a part and should assume some degree of responsibility in making it
the success it should-be.
The normal expenses include such items as stationery and s~amps, bunting and
flags for decorating purposes, wreaths, transportation and ferriage fares in some instances,
and many other small items which in the aggregate reach an amount that makes it burdensome
for the veteran organizations to bear singly, especially sines so many of this class are out
of employment and find it impossible in many cases to pay their dues to their organizations.
The ~ity Gouncil of Norfolk has appropriated the sum of $1~0.00 for this year
to assist the Norfolk Oommittee, and voted to make this a continuing amount to be available
each year hereafter.
v+ ~ =,~ that a reasonable contribution by o~u~ own OounciI of thi~
five. dollars ($3~.00) to this year' s celebration would be Dust!freed, and would b_ of.g~e'
