January 12th~ ~c~M7-.T~_v ~gJ~q37 I UA~ ORDINANCE OF THE BUDGET APPROPRIATIONS FOR TNE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, FOR THE YEAR 1937" Motion of Mr. Lawrence, that a committee of two be-~opointed, to act with a like committee from the Board of. Supervisors of Norfolk County, to consider the advisability and possibility of building a new City and County Building, corner Court and Nigh ets., was adopted, and the Chairman appoinGed on said cow~ittee, ~essrs. Lawrence and Hutchins. On motion adjourned. City Clerk. President. Portsmouth, Va~ January 26th, 1937. At the regular meeting of the 0it~ Council, held January 26th, 1937, at 8:00 P.M.~ there were present: Jo~hn P. Leigh~ Leslie T. Fox, George L. Grimes, J.N. Howard, W.R. Hutchins, F.D~ Lawrence, H. Earl Weiseman, Pearle J.Wilson, City Manager. Minutes of regular meeting held January 12th, 1937, were read and approved. The following communications from the City Manager were read: ls$- "Effective February let, 1937~ the office hours for all city offices ~ill~ be from 9:00 A.M. ~o 5:00 P.M., each day, with the exception of Saturday~ when the of- rices will close a~ 12:30. These are the hours observed by .the County and State offiees.~ Eotion of Mr. Fox to approve the Nanager"s aotion~ and that the City At$o~ney ~resent an ordinance covering s~me, was adopted. 2nd ~ ~I was compelled to dismiss Assistant Fire Chief L.P. $1a~er, for the good of the ~ervice, effective January 18th~ 1'93Y. Er. W.B. Sykes, E~ineer Ln the~Fire Depar~men~ was promoted to the ~osition of Assistant Chief, effective the sam~ date.~ On motion ordered filed. 3rd - ~I ~hav~ abolished the office of City Veterinarian, and ~opointed H.L. klexander Chief Food Inspector,~effective J~uu~ry 21s% 1937.': On motion filed. Gtk - ~Since the last Council meeting, i have added one policeman to the ~orce, by promoting Substitute Bernard Caplan to the rank of regular pat~oiman.~ On motion ordered filed~ 5th ~I beg to snnounoe the resignation of Dr. L.Jo Roper, Director of P<olio Welfare,-effecti~-e February !st, ~ud ~he appointment of Dr. LoH.Denny to fill the po- sition made vaosnt by the resignation of Dr. Roper; also the appointment of Dr. Wm.A.B~own, Jr., as AssisZent Director, bo~h appointments effective January 22nd, 19~7.u On motion approved and filed.
