<br />Minutes of regular meeting held March 23rd, ~ere read and approved.

<br />T~he followingoommunications from the Olty Manager were .read:
<br />
<br /> 1st - The Manager stated that he had employed J.A.D. Par~ish to make the
<br />1936 audit for $550.00.
<br />
<br /> 2nd - The Manager stated that Miss Virginia Cooke had agreed to accept the
<br />$600,00 offered by the 0ity for the strip of lan~ on the west side qf EXm Avenme.
<br />
<br /> 3~ - The Manager presented a check fo~ $21.30 balance left of $100.00 given
<br />to the Committee appointed to go to Washington, in interest of the Municipal Light plant, as
<br />expense for the trip.
<br />
<br /> 4th - "Several months ago, Ida Watts stepped in a meter box which was left
<br />open, at~1502 Queen St., and sustained injury to one of her limbs. Her lawyer, A.A. Bangel,
<br />brought suit against the 0ity for $5,000.00.
<br /> After cqnsiderable negotiation, Mr. Bangel agreed with Mr. Barclay to
<br />settle the case for $158.00, to which I also agreed. This amount was paid from the Water
<br />Fund."

<br /> 6th- "On January 26th, last, the Council passed a resolution to pay $30.00 a
<br />month to Livermon Motor Oompany for storing trucks and equipment for Grimes Battery.
<br /> In order not to have to make an appropriation each month, and as it will
<br />take several months to build the new Armory, I suggest that you appropriate, at this time,
<br />$180.O0, which will pay the rent for six months."

<br /> Accompanied by Mr. Hunt, Superintendent of Schools, I viewed the premis-i ~
<br />es and my opinion is that it will greatly benefit the schools and will injure no one and I so '
<br />recommend."

<br />Motion of Mr. Fox to concur, and that an ordinance be presented, to cover same,
<br />
<br /> Sth - ~Mr. E. C. Parker, who is employed by the Pmb!ic Service Department, and
<br />has been in the City,s service for about nineteen years, has become physically unable to ten -
<br />der service,
<br /> I recommend that he be retired on a pension of $31.00 per month, which
<br />is one half of his regular pay.~
<br />
<br />Motion of Mr~ Weisem~u to concur in the Manager"s recommendation, was adopted.
<br />The~follswing ordinance, laid on table at last meeting, was taken up and read:
<br />
<br /> "AN ORDINANCE IMPOSING A LICENSE TAX FOR THE CITY OF
<br /> PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, FOR THE YEAR BEG~NNINGMAY 1st,
<br /> 1937."
<br />
<br />On motion of Nm. Fox, the ordinance was adopted, and by the following vote:
