<br />John P. Leigh, Leslie T. Fox, George L. Grimes, James N. Howard, W.R. Hut -
<br />chins, F. D. Lawrence, H. Earl Weiseman, Pearle Jo Wilson, City Manager.

<br />Minutes of regular meeting held July 27th, 1937, were read and approved.
<br />
<br />The following communications from the City Manager were read:
<br />
<br /> 1st - "Since the last meeting of the Council, Mr. J. Brownley Cherry, Keeper
<br />of Oak Grove Cemetery, ~as died, and Mr. T.D. Smith, his assistant, has been appointed to'
<br />this posit ion, on recommendation of Mr. W.L. Davis, Sup~. of Cemeteries."
<br />
<br />On motion ordered filed.

<br /> 2nd - "I have a telegram from Congressman Hamilton, notifying the City that
<br />the Works Pr0gr~ss- Administration has allotted$8,712°O0 for cleaning a~d renovation of
<br />buildings, in Portsmouth."

<br /> 3rd - "I have given consider~ole time a~d thought to ~he Almshouse situation,
<br />but so far have been mnable to decide Just what we should do with the limited funds ~hat we
<br />can use there, at this time.
<br /> I recommend that the Mayor be authorized to act wi~h me, and he and I
<br />will make a· full investigation and will ~rebably be able ~o make some definite recommenda -
<br />tion to~the Council, in ~he near fu~ureo

<br />The following eom~unicatioz~from the City Attorney were read:
<br />
<br /> 1st - ~At your meeting held on June 8th, 1937, you referred to me a request of
<br />Mr. O.F. Parker, 2017 North Street, to be refumded $~.86 for personal taxes for 193S paid in
<br />er~ro I have satisfied myself that the $2.86 should be refunded Mr. Parker upon surrender
<br />by him of the tax reeeip$, and I recommend that this~be done°
<br /> As to the request of Mr. Vance ~. White, tha~ he be Pelieved of personal
<br />taxes for 193l, 1932~and 1933~, I have no evidence as to the ownershi~of the property other
<br />than the statement of Mr. White. However, after viewing the tax return am~ such information
<br />as I have been able to ascertain in connection with ~he ma~ter I believe Mr. Whi~e should
<br />be relieved of~ $2.12 for 1931, $1.99 for 1932~ and $1.98 ~or 1933, and ~hat he should be
<br />tilled immediately in order ~hat he may pay taxes f~r 193~, 1935 and 1938 as he sta~ed he is
<br />anxious to do in his letter.
