The delousing machine, which was referred to in our previous repOrt,
has been removed~frem building, although it had never successfully been operated, so we were
told.- However, the mattresses are supposed to be thoroughly cleaued once each month, and
more often, if needed, by the Hampton Roads Exterminating Compsxay, but as stated in our pre-
vious report, we are of the opinion that the mattresses sho~ld be covered with some rubber
material-so that they could be washed and disinfected. It does not appear to us that spray~
lng with the disinfectant by an exterminating company is a safe and sufficient way of elim-
inating filth.
The showers inall of the cells are in need of attention. Most of them
have no spray, and in oneshower there is a wooden hslf barrel with skim of oil appeariD~
and is used by the pr'isoners for washing their clothes.
