<br /> Whereas,-Chapter 129 of the Acts of the Assembly of Virginia, adopted by
<br />the General Assembly cf 1938 gives the governing bodies of cities, towns and Counties in the
<br />State the right to adopt ordinances prohibiting the sale of wine and/or beer on Sunday; and

<br /> Whereas, the number of deaths and serious accidents res~ltong from the reck-
<br />less opera~ion of automobiles on the ~ighways of theState ~ud other law violations tending to
<br />destroy the Se.bbat~ and morals of youth and adults are gradually increasing; and

<br /> Whereas, It is ~he concensus of opinion of this organization that the in -
<br />crease of highway accidents and other law violations is largely attributable to the sale of
<br />wine e~d beer on Sunday,

<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the Norfolk-Princess Anne Bi-County
<br />W.C.T.U., that the Board of Supervisors of Norfolk County and~the governing bodies of the
<br />cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth adopt ordinances prohibiting the sale of wine and beer on
<br />Sunday, within the territorial limits of Norfolk County s~d the cities of Norfolk and Ports-
<br />mouth.

<br /> Mr. Hutchins stated that as the Supreme Court of the United States has de-
<br />creed that State and municipal officers should pay Federal Income tax, and that the ~evenue
<br />Department has ordered that said income tax should be paid from 1926, and on his mormon, the
<br />City Attorney was instructed to procare a resolution to be cent ~ o~r Senators and Congress-
<br />man, asking them to s~oport a Bill in Congress limiting such taxation to future salaries. #

<br /> Mr. Weiseman stated that the Federal Government is planning vast expansion
<br />to its air se~ice and that in the vicinity of Portsmouth, land suitable for airport can be
<br />purchased at a reasonable price. His motion that a committee be appointed, consisting of the
<br />City Manager, Mayor and one other councilman, to present to the Federal authorities the advan-
<br />tage Of purchasing land in the vicinity of Portsmouth, for ~ airport, was adopted.
