<br /> By petition filed with the Commission, the Southern Railway Company
<br />seeks authority to discontinue the operation of passenger trains Nos. land 2 daily, between
<br />Norfolk and Danville, Virginia.
<br />
<br /> It appearing to the- Commission that this matter should come before' it
<br />in a formal hearing:

<br /> IT IS OBDERED, That the matter be, and it is hereby, docketed for
<br />hearing before the Commission in its court room at Richmond on Friday, April 28th, 1939, at
<br />10:00 o'clock A.M.
<br /> IT IS FU~.THER ORDERED, That the petitioner post at each station which
<br />would be affeot~d by the proposed discontinuance of trains a notice to the public which shall
<br />advise of the purposes of the petition, time and place of hearing and that all interested par-
<br />ties should appear before the Commission at said time and place and present any pertinent tes-
<br />timony.
<br /> IT IS FURTHER ORDERED, That the petitioner give notice by proper ser-
<br />vice on the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors and Commonwealth's Attorney of each county
<br />through which passenger trains Nos. 1 and 2 now operate, and to the Mayors and th~ City Attor-
<br />neys of all cities from or to which passenger trains Nos. I and 2 operate advising of the pur-
<br />poses of the petition and time and place of hearing.

<br />In connection therewith, the following resolution was, on motion of Mr. Howard,
<br />
<br />"_MESOLUTION
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS the Southern Railway Company has made application
<br />to the State Corporation Commission to discontinue the operation of
<br />its trains #l and #2 operating daily between Norfolk, Va., and Dan -
<br />rills, Va., and
<br /> WHEREAS the State Corporation Commission will give a hear-
<br />ing to the above application, on Friday, April 28, 1939, at 10:00
<br />o'clock A.M., in its Court Room, State Office Building, Richmond, Va.,
<br />and
<br /> WHEREAS if the application of the Southern Railway Company
<br />is granted there Will be approximately eighteen persons affected, some
<br />of whom will remain employed on account of the seniority rule, but
<br />ultimately the entire number will be discharged, and
<br /> WHEP~V~AS in addition to the employment situation all express
<br />shipments will be delayed, mail services will be seriously affected
<br />and travel between Danville, Va~, and Norfolk will be compelled to
<br />travel during night ho~rs, and
<br /> WHEREAS the present train service has been in effect for ~
<br />years, and we see no reason why the present schedule should be changed
<br />at this time, therefore
<br /> RESOLVED that ~he City Council of Portsmouth, Va., in regu
<br />lar meeting held this 28th day of March, 1939, go on official record
<br />as opposing the application of the Southern Railway Company to discon-
<br />tinue the daily operation of trains #1 and #2 between Norfolk, Va.
<br />and Danville, Va., and further
<br /> RESOLVED that the Honorable Mayor, City Manager and City
<br />torney be authorized to take such action as may be deemed necessary to
<br />present these resolutions before the State Corporation Commission at
<br />the hearing to be held: Friday, April ~8, 1939, in Richmond, Va."
