Grimes, James N. Howard, W. R. <br />Hu~chins, Frank D. Lawrence, C. E. Warren, H. Earl Weiseman, Pearle Jo <br />~ilson, and the ~ity Manager. <br /> <br />· he following call was read: <br /> <br /> "Please attend a called meeting of the City Council, in the Council Chamber <br />at 7:30 P.N., on April 18t~h, 1939, for the purpose of conferring wt~ the~ laundrymen and dry- <br />cleaners of Portsmouth, relative to their license tax. <br /> <br />By Resolution of the 0ouncil~" <br /> <br />On motion cf Mr. Hutchins, privilege of the floor was granted to anyone in - <br /> <br />terested. <br /> <br />The following petition was read: <br /> <br /> "we, the undersigned members of cleaning and pressing firms in the City of <br />Portsmouth, respectf~Ily ask that ordinance #20 governing Cleaning and Pressing be changed <br />to comply with the State Law, which reads as follows: <br /> <br /> If the entire gross ~mount of business done by any such person <br />durLug the preceding year shall not exceed twelve thous~ud dollars, such fee <br />shall be ten dollars; if the entire g~oss amount of such business exceeds <br />twelve thousand dollars, such fee s.hall be ten dollars plus one dollar per <br />thousand for all such b,meiness in excess of twelve thousand dollars; pro ~ <br />vided, however, ~hat such fee shall not exceed forty dollars in any case. <br />~nis State law can be found in Section ~ of the State laws pertaining to <br />Cleaning and Pressing Business, approved April l, 1938. <br /> <br />Signed S.M. Brooks and 1~ others." <br /> <br /> J. H. Waters, C. L. Cain and W.N. Nanley spoke for the cleaners and pres - <br />sers, and Mr. Hill, Mr. Boyd, Mrs. Ripley and }Ar. Brice spoke for ~he laundry men. <br /> <br />Notion of Mr. Howard to go into ~u executive session, was adopted. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Hutchins to place the following ordinance on its first read- <br />ing, was adopted: <br /> <br /> "~ ORDINANCE TO AMEND AND REORDAIN SECTION l~ OF <br />'AN ORDINANCE IMPOSING A LICF~I~E TAX FOR THE CITY OF <br />PORTSNOUTH FOR THE YEAR BEGINNING NAY 1st, 1939 ~." <br /> <br />On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />Approved~- <br /> ~res Ident. <br /> <br />Clerk. <br /> <br /> <br />
