<br /> Minutes of regular meeting held June 2?th, 1939, were read and approved.
<br /> The following commUnications from the Oity Manager were read:
<br />
<br /> l~s$ - "At our lass meeting, y,u appointed a Transportation Committee, con -
<br />slating of Councilmen Warren, Weiseman, Grimes a~dWltcon, the ~Mayor and Oit~ Manager, to make
<br />an investigation, locking t~ re-routing sene of ~he~buses.
<br /> Th_le committee held a conference, but so far has. been unable to reach
<br />an agreement as ~o what is best to be acne. i ask t~a~t, this~ committee be eontinued, and sug -
<br />gest that the committee hold another conference after the-Oouneil adjourns ~omight."

<br /> On motion filed.
<br />
<br /> The following communications from the~ City Attorney were read.
<br />
<br /> Ist- "In connection with the letter of J. Jao Bangel, Adminietrator of the
<br />Estate of H. Bangel, referred to me at you~ last meeting, I find that the building which was
<br />assessed at $900.00 was damaged by fire in Narch, 1938, an~ was torn do~ on May 28th, 193~,
<br />as shown by the records in the office of the City Engineer. The lot is now vaeant and the as-
<br />sessment on the building value for 1939 was erroneous.
<br /> Nrc Bamgel should be refunded $11.25 on the taxes.paid for the first
<br />instaltmemt of 1~39 and should be relieved of $11.~5 for taxes which-will be due on the second
<br />installment."

<br /> On motion of Nr. Weiseman, recommendation of the Oity Attorney was ~proved.
<br />
<br /> 2~d - "In connection with the letter of n.J. Maxwell, referred to me at your
<br />last meeting, ~ f lnd that Mr. Nax~etl was l~m~roperty assesse~ for personal ~roperty tax for
<br />193~. I ~hink that he should be refunded t~e $3.21 as requested~in his let~er~,
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. ~eiseman that the Attorney,s recommendation be approved, was
<br />adopted.
<br />
<br /> 3rd - "In reference ~o the letter of E.L. Mills, referred to me at your last
<br />meeting, all t~xee under the la~s- of Virginl~ are assessed asef January let. According to
<br />the letter of Mr. !.~llls, he was properly assessed for the year 193~ and is not entitled to the
<br />relief requested." - ~

<br /> On motion of Mr. Hutchins, the Attorney,s recommendation was con~urred in.
<br /> The following letter, laid on table at last meeting, was taken up:
<br />
<br /> "I~ will be necessary, at this time, to appropriate $4,500.00 to carry on the
<br />Women, s Sewing Project.
<br /> Thiz should be sufficient to last until about the let of March, 1940."
<br />
<br /> On motion of Nr. Fox, approp.ri~tion of $4,500.00 for sewing project, was made,
<br />and by the following vote:
<br />
<br /> Ayes: Lelgh, Fox, Grimes, Howard, Hutchine, Lawrence, Welseman,
<br /> Warren, Wilson
<br /> Nays: None
<br /> ~he Man,ar sta~ed that in. the Spring, seventy five~ditapidated buildings had
<br />been inspected and condemned amd that to date thirty seven of this number had been repaired or
<br />rai zed.
<br /> Nr. Hmtohi~s. state~ that the weed ordina~ee, adopted recen$1y, is being en -
<br />forced; that, according to the Health Department, weeds have been cut on three times as many
<br />lots TJ~Is year, as in any previoms year.
<br />
<br /> Bill of J. Shirley Hope., $~ate. Game Warden, for killing eighty one tagless
<br />dogs at $2.50 each,~etallng $202.50, was presented.
<br />
<br /> On motion of Mr. Hmtchins, the 0ity Treasurer was authorized to pay this bill
<br />fr~m funds in her hands from collection of Dog Taxes.
<br />

<br />Report of the Olty 0ollec~r for the month of June was received and ordered

<br /> Mopert of Frederick B. Hill & Comp~uay for auditing records and accounts of
<br />the Ferries for month of Kay, 1939, was received, and on motion ordered filed.
<br />
<br /> Mr~ Hutchins etate~ t~hat a group of citizens, representing the new hotel pro-
<br />Ject, desired to be h~eard, and his motion that privilege of ~he floor be granted, was adopted.
<br />
<br /> On motion , the oounci! went into executive session, with the new hotel corn-
