La.once,

Notion: "During the early days of the finaucial drive in behalf of our new
hotel, M~.._John A. Morris was almost continuously busy in an effort to make answer to var -
ious reports that were then being cireulated aud which in many instances were calculated to
east aspersion upon the sincerity of the movement. Added to this I can also imagine that
those Who compmised the Hotel Committee were met many times wi~h rebuff and discouragement.
Portsmouth is not a place of great wealth but is essentially a working man's Oity~ so that I
freely acknowledge that when the announcement came of an impending effort to raise $125,000.O0
by popular subscription for a new hotel, I did not believe that it could be accomplished.
I have observed with great satisfaction the various reDorts of
the Hotel Committee and with pride have watched the project as it was removed from a status of
seeming Impossibility to a creation of gleaming reaIity. I have likewise hoard from time to
time the kind words of thanks that have come from this fine committee to those who in some way
o~ another had aided in their work. It, however, occurs to me that all of this should now be
very definitely reversed and as a member of the Portsmouth City Couhoil, which honor I sin -
cerely cherish, ! am of the desire that there be an offielal expression accordingly. There -
fore, to John A. Morris and his great committee ! extorted thanks for a grand Job, magnificently
done, and which reacts only to the advancement .of the welfare of our Cit~y.
I move, Mr. Chairman, that the Council, as a whole, so e.xpress
itself."

Bill of J. Sh&r!e~ Hope~ State Game Warden, for destroying eighty four t~g-
less dogs at $2.50 each, totaling $210.00 was received, and on motion of Er. Howard, the
Treasurer was authorized to pay same 2rem fumis in her hands from coliection of Dog Ts_xes.

Compensation reports of the Commissioner of Revenue aud Oommonwea!~h Attor-
ney, for July,~ were received, and on motion of Er. Fox, approved for payment.

Report of F. B. Hill & Company for auditing the .ferry books and accounts for
the month of June was received and ordered ~iled.
