vacation, and a swimming pool at the earliest opportunity. <br /> We~b~ve the honor to be: <br /> <br />Respectfully, <br /> <br />The Women's Council - <br /> <br />said petition. <br /> <br />SusannahHenderson, President and <br /> numerous others." <br /> <br />The privilege of the floor was granted Cordelia Dance, ~no spoke in <br /> <br />favor of <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Grimes, said petition was referred to the City Manager. <br /> <br /> The following letter was read, and on motion,~laid on table: <br /> <br /> "The Co~uittee for Portsmouth's Seventh Birthday Ball for President Roosevelt <br />leased the auditorium in the Armory Building, with the use of the kitchen, for the President's <br />Ball, held on the nig~ht of Tuesday, January 30th, 19~O,-and paid to the City Collector the ~&m <br />of $30,00 for the rental thereof. <br /> This ball was held for the purpose of raising funds t6 continue the war on <br />infantile paralysis and fifty per cent of the said funds will be sent to National Headquarters <br />and the remaining fifty per cent will be used for the relief 6f local infantile paralysis cases~ <br /> Since the use of the City Armory was purely for charitable ourposes the under~ <br />signed respectfully requests the City Council of th? City of Portsmouth to ~efund to the Chai~- <br />man of the President's Birthday Ball Committee the $30.00 paid for the ten,at of the City Ar <br />mory for the evening of January 3Otb, 1940o <br /> <br />Respectfully~submitted: <br /> <br />was adopted: <br /> <br />Geo.,O. Diggs, Chairman, <br />President's Birthday Ball Committee." <br /> <br />The following letter was read, and motion of Mr. ~ilson to make ~ald refund, <br /> <br /> "The Portsmouth District Committee of Tidewater Council Boys Scouts of America <br />leased the 0ity~A~ditorium for the evening of February 1Oth, 1940, for the purpose of holding <br />its annual court of honor, and paid to W.L. Davis, S ~ <br /> . ~ . up~., $15~O0 rental therefor. <br /> The meeting was attended by all members of the Boys Scout organization, and <br />their parents and friends. <br /> The~Boys Scouts of America is a voluntary non-profit association having as <br />its purpose the ~haracter building of the boys of Portsmouth. The Portsmouth District 'is ex - <br />tremely limited in funds, ~ll of which are obtained by voluntary subscriptions from Portsmouth <br />citizens and as no admission charge was made, the rental of the auditorium would have to be <br />t~ken from our regular budge~, in wbleh no prevision is made for such expense. <br /> The undersigned for the P~tsmouth District Committee of Tidewater Council <br />Boys Scouts of America, respectfully requests the 0ity Council of the City of Portsmouth to <br />refund for the Distric~ Oommlttee the $15.00 paid for the rental of the City Auditorium for <br />the evening of_Feb~ax~y TOth, 19~O. <br /> <br />Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br /> Robert Do Powers, Jr., <br />Ohairman~ A~vaneement'Oommittee." <br /> <br /> The COmpensation reports of the Commonwealth Attorney ~nd Commissioner of <br />Revenue for January, were received, ~ud on motion of Mr. Fox, approved for payment~ <br /> <br /> Bill of J. Shirley Hope, State Game Warden, for destroying 102 tagless dogs <br />at $2.50 each, totaling $255.00, was presented, and on motion of Mr~ Fox, the Treasurer was <br />authorized~ to pay same from funds in her hands from collection of Dog Taxes. <br /> <br /> Report of F.Bo Rill & Company for auditing the ferry books and accounts for <br />the month of December, was received and ordered filed. <br /> <br />On motion adJour~ned. ~_~ ~ ~~ <br /> <br />Clerk. <br /> <br /> Aooreved - ~ <br /> <br />~ President. <br /> <br /> <br />
