<br />Motion of Mr. Fox to accept said invitation, was adopted.

<br />2nd - "I regret to report to you that since our last meeting, the City has
<br />lost one of its most loyal and efficient employees, the Plumbing Inspecter, Mr. Louis Watson.
<br /> The Manager has appointed, to succeed him, Nr Fred Calvert, W~o is an
<br />experienced plumber, and who, I think, will make the City a good man."
<br />
<br /> Notion of Mr. Fox to appoint a commitZee of three to present to the Council, a
<br />resolution of respect on the death of Nr. Watson, was adopted.

<br />3rd - The Manager presented the following letter, which was, on motion, or-
<br />
<br /> "t hereby take this method of expressing my sincere gratitude to the
<br />Oity 2,Ianager, and every member of the City Council, in restoring my salary back to my former
<br />base of pay, which X was receiving before it was cut during the deoression. I can assure you
<br />I will always perform the duties required of me to the very best o~ my ability, which I have
<br />done for the past twenty nine years as a City employee, always having the interest of our City
<br />in mind, responding at all times, night and day, to perform any duties required of me in our
<br />department.
<br /> Thanking you one and all, and again assuring you of my appreciation
<br />the restored increase in pay, I beg to remain,

<br /> 4th - The Manager presented the following recommendation of t~he City Attor
<br />in which he concurred:

<br /> "I agreed with counsel reoresenting Mrs. Lillie Stewart to nay her the
<br />sum of One Hundred and Twenty Five Dollars, in s~ttlement of her damage suit of $2~500j00,
<br />pending in the Circuit Court of the City. Mrs. Stewart sprained her ankle on the night of
<br />October 25th, 1940, at the corner of Mt. Vernon Ave. and Cemmerce St. in a hole which adjoined
<br />the concrete pavement. She lost two weeks work and she incurred the expense of two X~ray pic-
<br />tures and a doctor's bill. Dr. M~ller examined her on December 2yth and reported evidences of
<br />the sprain at that time, but Mr. Haug and I went over the case with the street hands and
<br />thought it advisable to settle the case-at the above sum."

<br />dent, until Dr. Stauffer, State.Director of Public Welfare, and the-City Manager can agree on
<br />a ~permanent appointment."

<br /> cil, from the colored people of ~he City, for a building to accommodate the recreational acti~
<br /> vitles and assemblies of colored people.
<br /> I am endeavoring to ascertain what it will cost to comply with this
<br />~request, On account ~ f additional overhead of $~O,OOO. assumed for this year, which is neces-
<br /> sary to maintain the ten per ten3 ~aise in wages and salaries of city employees, including
<br /> school teachers, it iS very un!ikemy that the City will be able to push this project until the
<br /> City's finances improve."
