This !ocation~
following a survey of a number of sites near the City limits, was selected upon the recommenda
tion and ~prov~l of the Director of Aeronautics for the State of Virginia and a Federal air
port engineer~ who came to Portsmouth for this purpose at the reeuests of the Chamber of Com -
meres end the Aviation Gompsny. The site~ we ~re advised, is ex6ellently located, well within
distance limi$ required by C~ regulations ~ud consists of eighty-seven acres with sufficient
adjacent land suitable for future enlargement or len~tening of runways, should this become
necessary, and is available at re~sonable cost.
Aviation Service during tlee past year that it has been in operation at thi~
airport, has had over 250 students t o begin t raining~ A number of these have obtained flying
licenses. ~ore ths~ one hundred students are now in training. This training is given under
handic~o due to the lack of airport facilities~ suc~ as hangers, repair shop, office, etc.
The compsr~y maintains a fully equipped field at Ns}~ort.News and is co,celled to fly planes
u~ed in Portsmouth back and forth for servicing and housing.
It~as been demonstrated very clearly to the Chamber of Commerce Ai~ort
committee that m~uicipal ownership of this airport means much to th~ interests of this City
at t~ls time~ for many reasons~ some of which are as follows~
(1) Approved site now in operation with ample land
adjoining for enlargement, if found necessary.
(2) Responsible Aviation Company will enter into
contract to erect al! necessary buildings and
maintain an adequate airport service, without
cost to the CiSy~ ~nd who is at present success-
fully operating this serv~ce~
(3) Established air lines are seeking new route~.
Portsmouth's geographical location makes it pos-
~ible~ we believe, to secure one of these lines.
(4) The Seaboard Air Line .Raillery has applied for
permission to. es~o~ish ~ir transportation. In
the event this permission is obtained~ we are
informed they will b e compelled to consider
Portsmouth as a landing point in m~king connec -
tions with' their railroad facilities already here.
(5) Federal'~d State aid to develop the land for air~
