<br />~he mo~$ modern tha~ can be constructed wi~h t~ee ovens divisible oy three separate boxes,
<br />w~ch allow ~y portion of ~he incinerator ~o be opera, ed or graduated down when full volume
<br />is not in demand. AS its maximum ~lume, i~ can burn one hundred ~ons of refu~e ~d debris in

<br /> We were fortunate during the year to ha~e Fourth SS. from Court
<br />Navy Yard completed by the ~blic ~ads~Administration at no cost to our City and the total
<br />~eunt of ~he proJec~ was in excess of Sb~,OOO. O0~ I may ~d, wi%hour t~s improvement, d~ing
<br />1943, ~he m~n~enance alone on t~s stress would ~ve been in excess of $5,000.00. There were
<br />sixty-~wo streets imp~ved or surfaced during the year, or a total of~240,OOO square yards of
<br />~imp~Vemen~s. The Engineering Department further placed crushed stone and initial surface
<br /> 4o,ooo
<br /> treatment on seven~een ~di~ion~ streets, totaling nearly square yards.
<br /> The City's co~opera%ive plan for new sidewalks resulted in ~he laying of 9,500
<br /> aquae yards of permanen~ concrete sidewalks in various sections of the City.
<br /> The Council ~oprop~ia~ed funds for a new playground north of the High School
<br /> and we ~ve almos~ filled ~s area to necess~y requirements. However, as soon as we begin

<br /> Work was completed on ~he Naval Bhore Pat~l headqmarters which, a~ the pre~-
<br /> en~ time, has abou~ ~ir%y-five men on duty in the City and f~ ~elve ~o twenty men sleep
<br /> nigh~ i~ ~he Barlow Building. The City ren~ed this building, has put all of the improvements
<br /> en it. ~= at the oresen~ ~ime, is renting space to three organizations in addition to granting~
<br /> free use ~o the Shore Patrol for their headquarters and _or ~he use of their men.
<br /> Permits were g~an~ed~for new work as follows: non*residential, totaling 36
<br /> a~ a valme of $195,000.00; 150 pe~i~s for ~ep%lr~ totaling $569,000.00. TD~ value of build-
<br /> ings ~ perished. 4uring 19~3, of all types, w~s $3,~19,~88.00, as compared with a like figure
