May 8th, 1945, the daSe for the regular meeting of the City Council <br />was declared V E Day by the President of the U~ited States, marking the cessation of hostili- <br />ties in the European theatre of War, the President of the City Council issued a notice post- <br />poning the meeting from May 8th to May llth~ 1945, at 7:30 P.M. <br /> <br />A~Dproved - <br /> <br /> ~-~ ~ President. <br /> <br />Portsmouth, Va., May lith, 1945. <br /> <br />present: <br /> <br />At a meeting of the Oity Council, held on May !lth, 1945, there were <br /> <br />Leslie T. Fox, James N. Howard, Frank D. Lawrence, E. Robie Stur~ <br />tevant, C. E. Warren, H.Earl Weiseman, Pearls J.Wi!son, and Arthur <br />S. Owens, City Manager. <br /> <br />Minutes of regular mee~ng held on April 24th were read and apgroved. <br />Report of the Committee on Park Visw Playground: <br /> <br /> "His Honor~ the Mayor, appointed W.R. Hutchins;. Pearle J. Wilson - and <br />E. R. Sturtevant to meet with the 0ity Manager with reference to property in ~est Park View~ <br />owned by Syies and Wilder. The land would be used as a plaYgroUnd by the City. <br /> It is our recommendation that the land be purchased at a price noz <br />exceed $4~500~O0~, with all taxes and interest paid ~hrou~h April 30th, 1945, <br /> I~ is our belief this will make an excellent playground and the chil- <br />dren of West Park View are in great need of this facility." <br /> <br />0ommittee <br /> <br />W. Ro Hutchins, Chairms~ <br />Pearls J. Wilson <br />E. Robie Sturtevant.~ <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Sturtevant that the report be approved and an appropria- <br />tion o f $4~500.O0 for said purpose be laid on table until the next meeting, was adopted. <br /> <br />following: Privilege of the floor was granted Mr~ George Smith, who presented the <br /> <br /> "I hereby offer ~o ourchase from the ~ity o f Portsmouth all those <br />certain parcels of land, being lots 55, 56~ 5Y, 58~ 59, 60, 6z, 62~ fronting on Perr~ Street <br />and lots 63, 64, 65 and 66 fronting on Glasgow Street, said lots situate at the southeast in- <br />tersection of Glasgow ~ud Perry Streets in the City of Portsmouth; and the Jib lots adjoining <br />said lots. <br /> I would like for the aforesaid property to be advertised for sale <br />subject to the lease now outstanding on lots 59~ 60, 61 ~u~ 62 frontingo n Perry ~eet~*~ and <br />lots 63~ 64, 65 ~ud 66 fronting on Glasgow Streets, end in the event anyone other t?mn the <br />lessee, W.H. ~ape!l,Jr., should become the purchaser of the aforesaid property, they are to <br />pay W.H.
