June ~6th~ l~5. <br /> <br />Nrc Grimes nominated Mr. Harry H.Harcum from Third District. There being~no other nominations, <br />vote being taken, the nominees were declared elected, and by the ~ollowing vote: <br /> <br /> Ayes: Fox, Grimes, Howard, Lawrence, Sturtevant, Warren, <br /> Weiseman, Wilson <br /> Nays: None <br /> <br /> The vote being the same for each. <br /> <br /> Letter from the Superintendent of Schools notifying the Council of the expiran <br />tion of the thr~e-Year term, on July 1st, 1945, of the following members of the School Board: <br /> <br />First District - Gaston Foote <br />Second District - Cecil E. Jones <br />Third District - George B. Kittrell <br /> <br /> Notion of Nr. Howard to go into the election of the members of the School <br />Board, was adopted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Sturtevant nominated Mr. Gaston Foote for First D~strict and Mr. Wilson <br />nominated Mr. Cecil ~.Jones from Second District. There being no other nominations, same were <br />closed and the nominees were elected and by the following vote: <br /> <br /> For: Fox, Grimes, Howard, Lawrence, Sturtevant, Warren, Weiseman,Wilson <br /> Against None <br /> <br />The vote being the same for each. <br /> <br />The following letter was read and ordered filed: <br /> <br /> "It came to our attention a~ the last meeting of our Leagne that there is a <br />vacancy on the City. School ~oard from Harrison ~ard District. <br /> In view of t~e fact that a larg~ percentage of the school population is col- <br />ored, we feel that a colored member on the Board would be best qualified to serve this group <br />and the interest of the colored population in general. <br /> With this ~nd in view, ~e voters of the Arcadia Heights Civic League are <br />submitting the names of the following ditlzens for your consideration in the election to fill <br />the vacancy on the School Board: <br /> <br />James A. Overton, 315 Allen Ave., a ~ative of Norfolk County <br />where he attended the Public Schools. After graduating from <br />Virginia Union University, he returned to Norfolk County where <br />he was Principal of the ~k~0od~High School until 19~l, He <br />He entered thee ~hore Patrol of the U.S.Navy in 19~2, and is <br />now serving as a Chief Specialis~. He is stationed locally. <br /> <br /> 2. Mr. C. Thomas Young, ~3 Deep Creek ~lvd., a native and life <br /> long resident of Portsmouth who has alway~ Been active in <br /> civic and community ac~ivi~iesJ He attended Lincoln Univer- <br /> sity. <br /> <br /> We trust you will give serious consideration tot he appointment of one of <br />these gentlemen to the Portsmouth Board. Baron speak before the body of the Gity Council at one of the <br />regular meetings in regard to th~ a~option'of the healthlm'ogram. <br /> If permission is granted, please advise us the date of the next regular <br />meeting. <br /> Yours very truly, <br /> <br />Robert G. Brooks, Sec.~ <br /> <br /> A statement of the Portsmouth Library Association was presented and refer- <br />red to the City Manager. <br /> <br /> The Nanager presented a ~chematic plan drawn by George Van Leeuwen for the <br />Veterans Rehabilitation Building, aud commen~ed tha~ the pla~-could be adjusted for a ground <br />floor in mn area anywher~ in the City that had sixty to ni~ety feet. <br /> The Manager commented that it would cost aRRroximately $30,000.00 for the <br />construction of the building and from $3,0OO~OO to $5,000.00 for the land. The Manager fmrther <br />commented that there would be technical points involving ownership~ between the City and the <br />County a~ ~$~dy should be made. as to how the cost could be amortized. He suggested tha~ the <br />building be placed at some point whereby it could be converted into a store or be rented for <br />some purpose after it had ceased to be used bY the Veterans Rehabilitation Committee. <br /> <br /> <br />
