September llth, 19~5. <br /> <br />penalty clause. <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Wilson, said ordinance was adopted, as' amended, and by <br /> <br />the following vote: <br /> <br />'Ayes: Pox, Grimes, Howard, Lawrence, Sturtevant, Warren, Wilson <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> The following ordinance, placed on its first reading at the la~ meet- <br />ing, was taken up a~d read: <br /> <br />"iN OPDINANCE TO PROVIDE FOR THE EXTENSION OF THE CORPORATE <br />LIMITS~OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, IN PURSUANCE OF THE PRO- <br />VISIONS OF CHAPTER 120 OF THE CODE OF VIRGINIA, AS HERETOFORE <br />AMENDED." <br /> <br />Privilege of the floor was granted anyone interested. <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Wilson, seconded by Mr. Howard, said ordinance was <br />adopted and by the following vote: <br />Ayes: Fox, Grimes,. Howard,Lawrence. Sturtevant, Warren, Wilson. Nays: None. <br /> The r~ort' of the City Clerk and Auditor for the month of August was <br />received and c~dered filed. <br /> <br />The following letter was read and referred to the City Manager: <br /> <br /> tiThe Federated Shop Craft of the Seaboard Railway Shops representing <br />several hundre~ employees Instructed me at their last meeting to write ~nd ask you that, <br /> <br /> First - Tha~ you have a s~op light placed at the corner of Sixth Ave. <br />and County St. This is one of the mos~ dangerous corners in our City. I~m sure there have been <br />more accidents here fnan on any other corner in our City. Doing the busy hours the shop em <br />ployees~trying to get to work find it nearly impossible to cross County St. Sometimes it takes <br />five or ~en minutes to cross at the corner there. A stop light~w~uld space the traffic all <br />along County St. a~d make it possible for the sho~ employees to cross CountySt. <br /> <br /> Second - We would appreciate it if you would investigate and consider <br />the opening of ~th Ave. through to the ~hop~ It would onl~ mean ~the extending of 7th Ave. one <br />half block. I'm q~ite~sure it could ~e acne at a small cost. I$ would be a big benefit to <br />shop employees. The Federated Shop Committe~ is ready to co-operate with you in any way they <br /> <br /> Trusting that you will consider t~e two requests and assuring you <br />both will benefit the Seaboard employees, we are, <br /> Very truly yours, <br /> <br />Federated Shop Crafts, <br /> Seaboard Railway Shops, <br /> A.S. Edwards, Seo." <br /> <br /> Notice from the League of Virgin~ Municipalities of the Annual Con - <br />vention of the League at the John MarShall Hotel in Richmond, Va., on October 21st, 22nd and <br />23rd, was received and ordered filed. <br /> <br />The following letter was read: <br /> <br /> ~At the regular meeting of the Portsmouth Central Labor Union, held <br />Friday September [th, the following motion was unanimously adopted. <br /> Resolved: That the Central Labor Union go on record and urge the pro- <br />per authorities in charge_of the Portsmouth- Norfolk Ferries to install modern and adequate <br />rest rooms for both male and female, white and colored, in ~he wa~lng rooms to the ferries, <br /> I was instructed by the Central body to send your Honorable Council <br />a copy of this resolution and urge its adoption, pointing out the deplorable and unsanitary <br />condition of the present rest rooms which we know to be obsolete and a menace to good health. <br /> I am also sending a copy or'this resolution to the County Board of <br />Supervisors. <br /> With Best wishes, I am, <br /> Respectfully yours, <br /> <br />Glenn T. Please make the necessary official record o f this appointment,t~ <br /> <br /> Mr. Wilson stated that chain stores mak%ng their deliveries at night <br />create a considerable amount cf noise. <br /> <br /> The City Manager stated he would confer with the operators of chain <br />stores about thi~ complaint. <br /> <br /> <br />
