10th - ~I am passing this on to you as a suggestion. Mr. Kenneth Scribner,
Jr. named a Craft after the City of Portsmouth in the Pacific area, and it enjoyed considera-
ble publicity for our good city.
It seems fitting to me that we ta~e official cognizance of their
excellent work."

llth - ~I am in receipt of the following letter, which I have been request-
Council:

'As President of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and on
behalf of the chapter members, I wish to register the strong
opposi~ti0n of the chapter to the removal of the Confederate monu-
ment o~ Court Street.
The m&n~ment is a memorial to the Portsmouth men who fought and died
for their native state and Confederacy. The monument represents a tre-
mendous struggle to raise funds for its erection. The monument is one
of the distinctive land marks of Portsmouth. Many cities would be glad
to have the historical background that Portsmouth enjoys.
All of the large cities have monuments in the middle of their lead-
ing streets and yet the leaders have not found it necessar~y to ha~e
them mo~ed.
Trusting that you and the Council will give this mat~e~ favorable'~oon-
sideration, I remain~
Respectfully yours,
