December 18th, 19~5. <br /> <br />community, and <br /> WHEREAS, in the past several agencies for promoting aotivites f~ the chil- <br />dren of our community have been successful, and <br /> WHEREAS, the City Council of Portsmouth is anticipating reducing the appro- <br />priation for the carrying on of such worthy children's activities would be detrimental to the <br />child welfare of our City. <br />THEREFORE, Be it Resolved that the Portsmouth Lions Club go on record op - <br />posing any reductiom in the appropriation.for Child Welfare work by the City of Portsmouth, and <br /> BE IT FL~.THER RESOLVED that the activities being carried on, such as Boys <br />and Girls~ Clubs and sports activities, etc. be continued and developed, and that the agencies <br />entrusted with the duties of carrying on ~he activities for child welfare of our community be <br />commended for their splendid work. _ <br /> <br />PORTSMOUTH LIONS CLUB <br /> <br />.Signed H. Engram, ~ho presented .the following:. <br /> <br /> ~we, the members of the Board of Directors of the Portsmouth Boys' Club, <br />have g~ne on record in favor of the contin ation and advancement of juvenile activities in the <br />City o f Portsmouth. <br /> Due to a report publicized in the Virginian-Pilot, there is to be a dras- <br />tic curtailment of funds for the recreation budget in 1946,we feel it our sincere obligation <br />to the youth of our City to implore you as the governing body of Portsmouth to realize that <br />one of t~e great~st services you can render ~o all Portsmouth citizenry is to do e~erything <br />in your power, not as a body in favor of a youth movement, but as a mq~ivati~g power to insure <br />every interested citizen that this obligation will be fulfilled in its entirety. <br /> <br /> : Trusting that your interest in our.future citizens is as deep and sincere <br />as ours, we 'are requesting that t~is matter be given your full consideration before any anti- <br />cipated curtailment be adopted. <br /> Sincerely, <br /> <br />(Signed) <br /> <br />A.C. We realize that such a Youth Guidance program has to be considered on a fi- <br />nancial-basis, however, the future of our youths will overbalance_the present cost. <br /> We therefore hope you will consider .our appeal from-every angle. <br /> <br />Sincerely yours, <br /> <br />Mrs~.W. T- Parker <br /> <br /> Mr. Butt, Chairman of War II History ~ommiss.ioh., asked for an appropria- <br />tion of $~,200.O0 for expenses. <br /> <br /> The Portsmouth Publis Library asked for an additional amount for the li - <br />brary of $450.00. <br /> <br />The following communications from .the City Manager were read: <br /> <br /> 1st - "Your informal request that I ~rite to our ~epresentati~es 'with <br />reference to changing the name of the local Navy Yard, was complied with. The attached letter <br />was dispatched on December Zth. The reolies received from our Congressman, Senator and Chair- <br />man of House of Representatives Committee on Naval Affairs, are attached." <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br /> 2nd - "In furtherance of your authority,we have engaged Robert B. Tun- <br />stall to assist us in.the annexation proceedings." <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br />Mr. Sturtevant excused from further attendance. <br /> <br /> 3rd - ~'The following new scales of s~laries are recommended for the line <br />officers in order to grant an incentive for promotion to men in the Police and Fire DeparZ <br />ments. This is to be retro-active to November 1st, 19~5, and will necessitate an appropriation <br /> <br /> <br />
