At a regular~mee~ing of the~City Council, held May 28th, i9~6, there were <br /> <br />present'. <br /> <br />Leslie T. Fox, George L.Grimes, W. R. Hutchins, Frank D. Lawrence, <br />E. Robie Sturtevant, 0. E. Warren, H. Earl Weiseman, Pearle J. <br />Wilson and-Arthur S. Owens, 0ity Manager. <br /> <br />The minutes of meeting held May lgth were amended and approved. <br /> <br /> The privilege of the floor was-granted Mr. I. Lindsay Leafe, Chairman of <br />the Memorial Day Committee, who invited the Council and Manager to occupy seats on the review- <br />ing stand o~ Memorial Day, the~parade to start at 9:30 A.M. <br /> <br />On motion, the invitation was accepted. <br /> <br />The following communications fro~ the City Manager were read: <br /> <br /> lst- ,The~llowing letter signed by many prominent citizens has been re- <br />ceived and I have advised the signers that ~ would present it to the attention of the Council: <br /> <br /> ~ Some of the friends~and officers and teachers of the.High <br />School earnestly request that a pension~be given to Miss <br />Nannie Butt, a city employee, when sh~ is no longer able to <br />work. <br /> For twenty-six years she has efficiently run the cafeteria <br />at the High School. During these years she has received a stated <br />sum from the net proceeds of the cafeteria, which by her excel- <br />lent management ha~ met all expenses, thus costing the school <br />board and city nothing. <br /> Sincerely , <br /> <br />Wm. A. Brown and numerous others." <br /> <br /> Motio~ of Mr. Hutchins to refer the petition to the City-Manager and <br />City Attorney was adopted. <br /> <br />Potomac Teleohone <br />capture clause: <br /> <br /> 2nd <br />Company <br /> <br /> ~I am in receipt of the fo!lo%~ng letter from the Chesapeake and <br />and recommend its acceptance for a year's lease with a thirty day re- <br /> 'We have examined the old fire station fram~ building <br /> and the shed that is attached to the brick building lo- <br /> cated on the northwest corner of Glasgow ~nd Effingham <br /> Streets and believe they are suitable for our use. We think <br /> it will be necessary ~o spend approximately $~50.00 on im - <br /> provements before we can use these quarte~s for a storeroom <br /> and garage. <br /> Considering this necessary'initial expense, we fee~ that <br /> $~5.00 per month would be a fair rental. The present outlook <br /> indicates that we will not be able to construct a new store- <br /> room and garage for some time and therefore we are ~nxious <br /> to secure a lease for these quarters. <br /> Hoping that this arrangement will be acceptable to the City, <br /> I remain <br /> Sincerely yours, <br /> <br />S. A. Kedy, Manager." <br /> <br />adopted. <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Hutchins to concur in the Manager's recommendation, was <br /> <br />Williams Estate and <br /> <br /> 3rd ~I am in receipt of an <br />I would appreciate authority to <br /> <br />offer for two lots on Laurel Avenue in the <br />sell these lots at public auction.~ <br /> <br /> Motion to refer to the City Attorney to act, if legal, was adopted. <br /> <br /> ~th "The Belt Line Railroad has asked us to extend o~mr forty-eight <br />inch storm drain thirty feet, in order to drain an area that they intend to enlarge for shop <br />facilities. <br /> The attaG~ed letter from the City Engineer is explanatory and I <br />recommend its accomplishment." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Grimes to place on its first reading an ~opropriation of <br />$660.00 for said purpose, was adopted. <br /> <br />tension of <br /> <br />the addit <br /> <br /> 5th - "I have been advised that lights ~rdered sometime ago <br />thawhiteway on High Street to the City limits, has been started.~, <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br /> ~6th - <br />of the Hustings Court <br /> <br /> On motion <br /> <br /> am in receipt of a report <br /> of the City of Portsmouth, <br /> <br /> ordered filed. <br /> <br />"The City owes a <br /> <br />balance~to Trinkle and Dobyns of approximately <br /> <br /> for the ex- <br /> <br />from the Commonwealth of Virginia for <br />Va. ~ <br /> <br /> <br />
