Wilson <br /> <br />The minutes of special moeting held June 18th were read and approved. <br /> <br />The President presented the following letter: <br /> <br /> nas a rosult oF the chango in time from Eastern Standard to Daylight Sav- <br />ing, we the undersigned~licensees of Retail Wino ~ud Beer are deprived of the benefit of one <br />hour of businoss during the most important hours of the day. At prosont we are compelled to <br />close our establishments at oleven P.M., daylight savLug t~ae w~hereas the ruling of the AB C <br />is that we are required to closo at elevon P.~o, Eastern St~dard time. <br /> Just recently the A.B.C. has ruled that we will have to close our busi - <br />ness according to timo established by the local authorities that is - daylight saving. <br /> We are therefore asking you to use your good officos and request the ABC <br />Board to permit their local licensees in this city to closo at Twolve P.M. Kedy, Manager of <br />the Chesapeake and'Potomac Telephone Company, and Lu furtheran_ce of his request, I am reading <br />his letter to you.~ <br /> <br />Inclosure - <br /> <br />~We have received official approval to p~oc&ed with the construc- <br />tion of Portsmouth's new tolephono building. I know that the'un- <br />usual co-operation given u s resulted in this favorable action. <br />Consoquently, I want to thank you personally for the assistance <br />you have given us in this matter.~ <br />Will you ploaso express this Company~'s sincere appreciation to <br />the Mayor and City Coumcil and assure them of ou~ gratitude? <br /> <br />Respectfully, <br /> <br />S. Parsons, U.S.P.H. <br />will be relieved from m~ty on J'~ly 15th, 1946, <br /> I mm passing this info~mation on to you in order t~at you may be <br />conversant With the demands that will be made on the City for trainod personnel. It will be <br />difficult to rendor this servico under the prosont budget." <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br /> 3rd - "Lieut. Col. James W. Roborts, of the First Battallion, Virginia <br />Stato Guard, has requested me to invite you t o the ceremonies attendant at the inactivation of <br />the State'Guard. ~ol. Roberts invites you to be at Foreman Field on Friday night, JUne 28th, <br />at 8:30 P.M., EST., for final ceremonies, at which time his Honor, Governor William M; Tuck, <br />will be present. <br /> Later, there wilI be a final progrsam at the 12th St. Ai~no~y and <br />Colonel Roberts is inviting members of the official family of Portsmouth to be present. <br /> It seems befitting at this time that this honorable body, b~ reso- <br />lution, should pay tribute to the splendid work done by th_is organization du~ing the War." <br /> <br /> The M~uager presented the following resolution which was, on motion of <br />Mr. Hows_~d, adopted: <br /> <br />"R E S 0 L U T I O N <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Virginia St&te Guard, which was created by the <br />Acts of the General Assembly,-as a war t~mue measure, will be- <br />come inactivated on Jume 30th, 1946, and <br />W~EWlLEAS, the Virginia State Guard, during the War-time emer- <br />gency was-of indisputable aid to the City Goverrnnent of Ports- <br />mouth and, <br />~W~,~REAS, tbn?ough'its Commanding Officers in Portsmouth, Norfolk <br />and in the State, the City Government of Portsmouth constantly <br />was afforded the assurance of a w ell-organized and w ell-trained <br />militia to protect the home front. <br />NOW, Tt~7~REFORE, BE IT ~SOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, that it extends its appreciation and sincere grati- <br />tude to all the men and officers of~t~is splendid organization <br /> <br /> <br />
