"~¥HEREAS, the Portsmouth Sports C~b, an organization vit~ly
interested in the furthering and promotion of wholesome sports
for public interests and enjoyment, let it be kno~ to the Couu-
cji ~ the City of Portsmouth that the said organization at its
last meeting on December 18th, unanimously voted to oppose a
proposed a~ssion tax on all foz~ms of sports.
~EREAS, The Port~touth Sports Olu~, in its desire to bring out-
standi~ sports activities to ~ne Cmty Of Portsmouth, feels that
the levy of this proposed A~ission Tax will drive away any large-
scale sports activity aud will fur~uer place Portsmouth, now on
the threshold of industrial development, into jeopardy wit~ the
interests of sports as a w~ole.
~S, the Portsmouth Sports Club has caused by its orgsmiza-
tion an activity amd a desire on tz~e part of Colleges to book
g~ames for the Portsmouth Stadiauu for the coming year, wdth reve-
nue for the city and its merchants.
~REAS, Norfolk, ~r sister city, by its levy of an amusement
tax, f~!ed last year to interest more than one college g~ae,
thus os~sing loss in revenues for F~em~uFietd, as ~ell as fail-
ing to book regular professional boxing for its city auditorium~
~th g~eat loss in this respect also
~REAS, the proposed a&uiseion tax will--questionably prove
a detriment to sports of ali kinds with a resultant loss to any
promoters, thereby taking away from a great sports-loving c~m~uni-
ty the opportunity of recreation for the u~sses of Portsmouth
