suit of the City of Portsmouth against the heirs of L.~. Gooimau, deceased, thirty-nine par-
eels of real estate. This suit was to enforce the collection of taxes. Three parcels were
purchased in the name of the City to protect its lien of taxes, the western half of lot #69 on
the north side of Gibney Street, at the price of ~2~.00, lots ~540 and ~4.~ on the noz~ch side

2nd The Man,get presented the following resolution:

~Whereas, the Southern Railway Company has filed a petition
with the Interstate Co~morce Commission for pe~uission to
ab~adon railroad sgrvice on the Zine now operated by it be-
tweenWest Norfolk and Danville, Virginia, and
~hereas, the Co~cil of the C~ty ~f Portsmouth believes such
railroad service is necessary ~d desirable a nd should not be
discontinued,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED ~ THE COUt~CIL OF TH~ CiTY
of Portsraouth, Virginia, that the State Co~poration Corm~ission
be requested to exert its best efforts to prevent the discon-
~inuauce of such railroad service, and the City Attorney be
directed to take s~chaction as may be deemed necessary to re-
tain railroad service ~etween West ~orfolk and Danville, Va."

0n motion of~.-r. '~ Howard, said ~esolution v~s adopted.

~rd ~The City offered to the Kings Daughters Hospital the use of an
electric generatbr for emergency us~. I fouud thus it would cost approximately $1,500.00 to
Lustall the generator in the basement of the hospital with a sv~tch, otherwise it will have to
be either left out of doors or placed in some ne~a~by building and connected at the pole line
when needed.
~fter further considering the matter, the Board of DLvectors of
the Hospital declined the offer of the City. The generator supplies only about one-fo~th of
the cuz~ent needed by the hospital and due to the several so~ees of supply of the Virginia
Electric and Power Coipany, it is seldom that there is a cessation of electric service.
I respectfully request that I be authorized to sell the generator
at the best price obtainable.~

~o~zon of ~r. Howard to concu~ in the ~a~%ager~s reco~endation, was
adopted.

4th - "~ajor Gedrge~D.Eastes, Co~ander of the 691st AAA AV~ Battallion,
Virginia National Guard requested that a wire fence be installed and cor~uected with the gar-
age at the Elm Avenue ~k~mory to protect vehicles v~nich the Federal Government will supply to
the battsllion. ~
The fence will enclose the rea~ fifty-five feet of the lot and if
there is no ob~ect~on, I will have the same ~rected.
I believ8 it is an obligation of the City for the protection of ~
the prope~y.~

0n motion, the Hanage~ was authorized to erect said fence.

5th - "Tou referred to me at your last meeting, a request of the North
True, on Corporation, for the.extension of water mains, sewers, and road improvements on Bagley
Street, to serve the fifty-five houses now being erected b~ it.
T~e Superintendent of the Water Department informs me it ~ill
cost ~pproximately$5,100. O0 to ~xtend the water mainsand Z have instructed him to do
of funds in the budget for extension of mains.
~%e ~ityEngineer s~ates the approximate fig-~es of $6750.00 for
th~ extension of sewers and ~5825.00 forstreet impr°Vements~ a~e correct. I believe the sew-
ers should be extended ~muediately and that the street improvements should be dc~e after the
roadways have had time to s ett~e mud form a firm foundation which would probably be the lat-
ter pa~t of t~e coming s~er, or inthe fall~ ! therefore recommend the appropriation of
$12,~75.00 to b& spent aslthe City Eanager deemes advisable.~
