201

May I0th, I955.

e~_z~.~ ~ the Setter received frc~ Edgar S. E-verbal, Registrar for Triniiy Ch~/rch., had objected to taxi-cab
stands on High Street. The objection as no,ed in the 'letter attached is opposing the establishment of a curb-
side commercial enterprise in the 500 block of Cour~ St.

I therefore restate my former rec~mmencL~tion that f~ur spaces west of Co~ Street
on the north si~e of High Street ~e designated as taxi-cab stands wi'th the understanding that should the City
require this sp~e temporarily for the- location o2 a reviewing stand or any ether ~nicipal af£air that the
taxicab operators wo~ld release the area for's~ch purposes;"

~{etion of Sir. As'~you have probably-realized, the discontinuance of the
Ferries would leave no convenient public ~ransportation for pedestrian traffic between lower HiEh St. and Norfolk
~e, of course, are particularlyo~tere, stedinthepassen~ersnsing our trains between POrtsmouthand the south.
Shou/~ the ferries ~e withdrawn, there is a possikility that the Etizaheth River Tun-
nel Commission wo~td be willing to route one or two buses along azer St. to s~op at the present C & O bus stop
at o~rstation. The~e buSeS wouldheenroufe to Norfolk between 8:30 A.M. and 9:00 A.~. to connect with our in-
bound train-which arrives in Portsmouth at 8:25 A~. daily; and enroute from.~Norfolk between 4:00 P.~. and 4:S0
P.~. to CO~lnec~ with our o~tboend train departing at 4:40 P.M. daily.
Since the Seaboard is an inte~rai part of the City of Portsmouth~ I feel sure the
officials of the City will ~-a~t t8 permit public zr~nsp~rtat~on vehicles to operate where the demand is justified
From oust records, ~fiud that we are presently hzudling approximately 75 passengers on esch train daily~ ~nd it
has been variously ~sti~rated th~ fro~ 60% to 80~ are Norfolk pasaengers.'~T~i~ would indicate there is s/Lfficier~
demand to justify the b~s service. It would be most i~convenisnt for passengers ~ith baggage to reach the present
tunnel bus stop on Court St., three block from the station.

-' ' The-continued ps, menage of ou~'tra~nsbybothNorfolkandPortsmouth.travelers is:neces
sary for the operation of the traln~.
