May 31st_~ 1956. <br /> <br />At a called meeting of the City Council held on May 31st, 1956, there were present: <br /> <br />FrOd A.Duke, ~Fra~k N.Bili~oly, Jr., ~eorge'L.~ri~es, J.N. Howard, <br />Edga3c ~ Eaw~ence, R. Irvi~e S~iith, E. R~S~u~tevant, 'I.G.Vass, <br />City Manager, and R.C2 Barclay,~ City Attorney. <br /> <br />The following call for the meeting was read: <br /> <br />31st, <br /> <br /> "Please attend a called meeting of ~he City Council, at 3:00 P.M., on Thursday, May <br />to consider the purchase of the Norfolk County Ferries property. <br /> A budget conference will be held immediately after this meeting." <br /> <br /> 56-171 - The £mll~wing letter from the Mayor was read: <br /> <br /> "As directed by the resolution adopted by you on January 10th, 1956, and by the resolu- <br />tion adopted by the Board of Supervisors on January 10, 1956, and later 're-affirmed by a resolution adopted by the <br />joint bodies and recorded in the meetings concerning the operation o£ the Norfolk County Ferries, ~ir. ~olon L.Hall <br />Chairman of the BQard of Supervisors and I offered for sale the real estate formerly used in the operation of the <br />Norfolk County Ferries, after having first given ten days~ notice ef the time, place and terms of sale, by adver- <br />tisement published in the Norfolk Virginian Pilot, a daily newspaper published in ~he City of Norfolk and having <br />general circulation ~n the citie~ of Norfolk and Portsmouth and the County of No~folk. The property was sold on <br />Ma~y ~4, 19~56, at public auctibm . The proper~y located in Portsmouth ~as offered for sale az ten-thirty o'clock <br />A.M., on the premises at the northeas~ corner of High and Water Sts., a~d Mr. Cli£ford ~Lason became t~e h~ghest <br />bidder for the sum of Twenty-four Thousand and Five Hundred Dollars. The City Council and the Board of Supervi- <br />sors met in joint session at two o'clock P.M., on the same day and unanimously voted zo redeem the bid of Mt.Mason <br />The minutes of the meeting were recorded in the minutes kept for the Ferry meetings. <br /> The property located in the City of Norfolk was sold on the premises a~ the foot of <br />Cormm'erc{al Place at twelve o'clock. The proper~y formerly the old ferry dock at the end of Commercial Place, and <br />Which ~he County of Norfolk claims as ~ts individual proper~y, was first offered for s~le and the highest bid was <br />Seventeen Thousand Dollars. The Newtons Wharf proper~y which ~he City and County acquired jointly in a deed from <br />the United States Housing Corporation, was nex~ offered for sale and the highest bid~made was Ten Thousand Dollsa~s <br /> The property locate~ in B~rkley, Ward of Norfolk, formerly known as the Pearl St. Fer~ <br />Dock, and which served the boat' which plied between Portsmouth and Berkley was next offered for sale~ and the <br />Ber~ley Machine Works and Foundry Company, Inc., became the purchaser at the price of Six Thousand Dollars. <br /> The City Council an~ the Board o£ Supervisors at its joint meeting held on May 24, 195, <br />unanimously adopted a resolution accepting the bids of the City of' Norfolk and the Berkley Machine Works and <br />Fonndry Co., Inc. <br /> I respectfully recommend that the action take~ by the bodies in the join~ session be <br />ratified and confirmed, and that the bid made by Mr. Clifferd Mason be re~ecte~, and the bids of the City of Nor- <br />folk and the Berkley Machine Works and Foundry Co., Inc. be accepted, and that the old ferry dock and Newton's <br />Wharf in Norfolk be sold to the~City of Norfolk for Thirty-five ~housand Dollars and the Berkley property on Pearl <br />St. be sold to the Berkley Machine Works and Foundry Co. Inc., for Six Thousand Dollars. <br /> - Tke sales in hoth cities were attended by many people and tl~re were a number of bid- <br />ders.'' <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Howard that the repor~ he received and filed and_that the recommendation <br />of the Mayor be concurred in, was adopted, and by the following vo~e: <br /> <br />Ayes: Duke, Bilisoly,Grimes, Howard, Lawrence, Smith, Sturtevanz <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />56-172 - <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Bilisoly, the following resolution was adopted: <br /> <br />"WHEREAS, it is deemed advisable for the City of Portsmouth to <br />purchase from the Connty' of~ Norfolk all of its interest in the <br />land, buildings and other property owned jointly by the County <br />and City and located in the City of Portsmouth and formerly <br />used in the operation of the Portsmouth-Norfolk County Ferries; <br /> <br />NOW, THEP~FORE, Be it Resolved by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth that the Board of Super~i~ors~ of Norfolk County be <br />and they are hereby offered the sum of Twelve Thousand and Five <br />Hundred Dollars for the interest of Norfolk County in said <br />property." <br /> <br />On mormon adjourned. <br /> <br />Approved - <br /> <br />President. <br /> <br /> <br />
