Motion of Mr. Baker to place said ordinance on first reading was adopted. <br /> <br />.56r20S - The.following letter from the Junior Chamber of Commerce was read: <br /> <br /> "For the past £our years, the Portsmouth JuniorChamber of Con~merce has sponsored an <br />official pageant preliminary To the selection of Miss America. Each of the four young ladies who has been de$i~-i <br />hated M/ss Portsmouth has been very carefully selected on the basis of beauty, talent poise and nersonalitv Eac~ <br />has represented Portsmouth in the Miss Virginia Pageant. Also, each has served a multitude of co'unity act~it~es~ <br />fund raising.drives, c~v~c projects, etc. Service o£ this kind, however, has been entirely uno£ficial. <br /> It occurs To us now that some official recognition of Miss Portsmouth on the part of <br />our Municipal Government would be good public relations for the City end further credit To the ou~szanding young <br />ladies who bear the title. We envision her serving as Official Hostess for much municipal functions as may be <br />appropriate, serving with the~major To grace such occasions as opening drives, cutting ribbons and the like_ <br /> <br /> · We propose thai you, by resolution, special ordinance, or whatever means is proper, <br />desiEnate Miss Barbara Turner "Miss Portsmouth of 1956" as Portsmouth's Official Hostess, the designation re pass <br />in turn to each succeeding Miss Portsmouth.
