January 8th, 1957

adopted.

We are doing much of the work here in Portsmouth of your Game Wardens and your Pound.
Therefore, we ~iake a~ appeal ro your Honorable Body for an increase in the payment now granted by the City .of
Portsmouth. This is necessary if we are to continue to give this City the services have given in the pas~. With-
out a suhsfantial 'contribUtion f~om the C~ty, we ~il~ be unable to continue wit~u~thls very important work. I will
be glad to ans~ any ~uestions you may wi~h ~to :ask concerning'ou~ work. If the ~ity can not see its way to give
us an increase in its contribution, then we offer this alternative -
Give us ~ contract for your pound work - as we are doing most of your pound work with animals now and
have been for nine years.- In this cont~ac{ you will give us the amount you are allotting for the operation of your
pound - your princmpal Game Warden can continue in his capacity of enforcing the dog tag law, but with your truck
equipment and your other W~rden, with our personnel, we can and will handle all animal work under our complete
control. This will do away with yoqr pound building as all dogs will be handled by our Shelter. This is the way
all Humane Society work with municipalities is operated. I will be glad to submit ~figu~es and discuss with you
this alternative plan. If this plan is accepted, we assure you that a much better job will be done by us than is~
being done by your local dog p6und, and better support will be given by the pqblic. The animals will be given a
better chance and we will operaze on a ~malle~ budget than that of th~ 'p~esent local pound.
Trusting that we may be given consideration a~d assuring you of our apprecia{£on of the help that
has been given us we are,
Sincerely ?ours,

Portsmouth Humane Society, by Bessie H. Aldrich, President."

Motion of Mr. Baker ~o suspend the rules to hear from the Portsmouth Humane Society, was

questing financial aid.

Mrs. Bessie Aldrich, William Oasr and C.M. Davenport spoke for the Humane Society, re-

Motion of Mr. Weiseman that ~a committe~ ~of three be 'appointed from the City Council, to
investigate this matter, was adopted.

The Chair appointed Messrs. Weiseman, Baker and Einton

57-20 - The following letter from the Planning Commission was read:

"The Planning Commission has received a request fromA.J. Mapp, Supt. of Schools,
approve the closing of Butler St. and Owens St.b~tween Ann and A Sts. ~t a meeting on January 3, , 1987, the Plan-
ning Commission considered this matter and is ~6commending to ~ity Council that the streets be closed as requested.

Motion of Mr. Smith to refer ro the City Attorney to draw proper ordinance, was adopted.~
: On motion adjourned.

Approved~~
President.
