Hawks.

Mr. Hinton nominated A.P. Johnson,Jr.

Motion of Mr. Kirby that nominations be closed and that Mr. Hawks and Mr. Johnson
be elected for a four year term beginninw October 1st, 1957, was adopted.

57-342 - The following letter from TV Station WAVY was read:

"Your ~erdial letter of September 13th, reflecting the good wishes of the gentlemen of
the CITY Council, was deeply appreciated. We hope that WAVY- TV will be an asset and credit to Portsmouth in
every respect. It is comforting to know That the Council is behind us, and as you have offered your services, we
offer ours whenever we can be of assistance."

On motion filed~

57-343 - The following letter from the Delinquent Tax Collector was read:

"The City has brought suit and sold property in the name of Samuel E.Shelton for lot
#17 blk. 6 on the south side of Gosport Road. The Foundation Boys' Academy purchased this property for $600.00
at the sale. This was not quite enough to satisfy all the taxes against this property. Please therefore, re -
lieve the following amounts:
1957 - $3.72
1956 - 7.44
1955 - 4.14
$15.30
I am inclosing a copy of the Court Order."

Motion of Mr. Kirbythat Taxes be relieved was adopted.

57-344 The following letter from Mrs. Charles Kanter was read:

'~We are frantic: We residents of Waterview are now being subjected to an even greate~
inconvenience with .~he new 45 minute bus schedule and we feel that it is unfair.
With the Fall and holiday shopping getting under way and the lack of parking space
in the city shopping area, we definitely need better bus service ~and s regular schedule that we can depend upon.
Tho many or most families own cars, we women do not always have use of them and so we
depend upon buses for transportation. It is the lack of bus service that sends us loosing for rides so when that
money could be spent with the Transit Company other means of reaching our destination are sought.
The maid situation poses another problem. They, too, depend upon bus service and
there are bus loads of them depending upon adequate transportation.
If you have been taking a poll, may I suggest that the busiest season is just be-
ginning and uou were a bit early .getting the true picture.
As a suggestion for a long needed service there could be a business-man's express.
Perhaps ~between the hours of seven-thirty and nine an express bus out of Waterview (no stops onHigh St.) every
twenty or thirty minutes, would be welcomed, I am sure. Since the Ci'ty is taking over all available lots for
customer-parking, lhere are less and less parking spaces Tot merchants. Is this not worth a trial?
Please consider your now set schedule of 45 minute intervals and help us get to
town and home agaiu min~s that high-blood-pressure we are sradu~lly building up to on account of the present
system you have sanctioned,"

Motion of Mr. Baker to s~spend the rules to hear from Jess Alspaugh, was adopted.

Nr. Alspaugh Spoke complaining of bus service.

Motion of Mr. Smith that a citizens committee be appointed to meet with the City
Council and the Transit Company to better understand the problem of the Transit Company, was adopted.

57-345 - Motion of Mr. Smith that a resolution be drawn in opposition to the pro-
posed telephone rate increase and forwarded to the StateCorporation Commission, was adopted.
*see page 48.
57-3~6 - .~e~.~n ~r~.S~it~ ~t,0 r~fer to the City Manager for investigation the
possibility of having ~wo hour parKmng
_ ~n t~.e north ,s~de of South St. between Washington & Green Sts.was adopted]
