<br />"Whereas, a public hearing will be held on
<br />Ju~e 9th, 1958, by the District Engineer, Corps
<br />o£ Engineers, UoS.A., Norfolk, Va., and
<br />
<br />Whereas, the Council of the City of Portsmouth
<br />is of the opinionthat the dredging and e×~end--
<br />Lng of the 35 foot channel in the Southern Branch
<br />of the ElizahetD River would be mos~ beneficial
<br />in the further development of the port,
<br />
<br />Now, Therefore, Be it Resolved that the Council
<br />o~ the City of Portsmouth approve this proposed
<br />project, and
<br />
<br />Be it Farther Resolved, that a copy ofthis
<br />Resolution be forwarded =o the District Engineer,
<br />Corps of Engineers, U.S.A., Norfolk, Va."

<br /> 58-171 - "The purpose of this letter is.to remind you that you received, and by
<br />action of Council, accepted the resignation of Mr. Lonnie Pope, City Assessor, effective May 31st, 1958.

<br />I am of the opinion that the Council should elect someone To fill the

<br /> Motic~ of Nr. Kirby to go into the election of an acting City Assessor, who shall
<br />have full power to carry ouz the~duties of the office of the City Assessor and shall serve until removed by
<br />the City Council, was adopted, and by the following vote:

<br />"Sales Days" on June 27th, a~d 28t~ t958,-~3~d ~ey have requested that ~s a gesture on the part of the City,
<br />~to encourage retail sales within the City, that the parking meters on t he streets and on the parking lots
<br />be used for~f~ee during these t < / - .....

<br /> They also desire to use a helicopter in promoting this special event by
<br /> having the helicopter drop ping--pong halls ~omn~he..ai~,~ contg~ng.p~izes for the bene/it of those who will
<br /> be attending and participating~n the buying of merchandise.

<br /> 58-173 - "Since preparing the agenda, I have received the attached letter from
<br />Joseph C. Stafford, a detective in the Portsmouth Police Department; who has resigned, effective May 31st,
<br />1958, for a refund of the amount of retirement pay withheld from ~is salary ~n the amount of $124.42.
<br />
<br /> I recommend that~the above amount~be paid to ~Lr. Stafford.
