59-218 - <br /> <br />Bartlett presented the following resolution, which was adopted without dis- <br /> <br /> "WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth wishes to record its desire to have a high level <br /> of employment in %he City and vicinity, ther'eby maintaining a stable and sound <br /> econb~y for this community, and <br />WHEREAS, the Curtis Dunn Marine Industries a~ the time of its closing was em - <br />ploying 151 persons for a total payroll of $11,264. per week; and the assets of <br />that company, when bold at auction by the Trustee in bankruptcy on Nay 26, 1959, <br />were substantially all purchased by The Small Business Admiais~ration; and <br />WHEREAS, the plant has remained idla for some months now, as January 26, 1959 <br />was the last week of full employment by the Curtis-Dunn Marine Industries; and <br />of those then employed 66% resided in the City of Portsmouth, 25% resided in <br />Norfolk County in suburban Portsmouth; 5% resided in the City of Norfolk; and~ <br />3% resided in areas other than those mentioned; and the continuing loss of <br />this substantial payroll is unfavorable to the economy of our community; <br />NOW TP2EREFORE, Be it Resolvedl that the Council of the City of Portsmouth, in <br />regular session kssembled does herein express its desire to have the plant <br />again placed in operation, with the resulting benefits of high employment and <br />increased earnings by our people; and that a request be conveyed ~o the Small <br />Business Administrktion that it start: at the earliest possible moment, nego- <br />%iations for th~ sale or lease of the idle plant and equipment, ~n order that <br />employment from that source will again be availa'ble." <br /> <br />On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br />Approved - <br /> <br />President. <br /> <br /> <br />
