286 <br /> <br />December 9, 1997 <br /> <br />Ayes: Benn, Clemons, Griffin, Martin, Pitts, Robinett, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />97 - 329 - Boards and Commissions <br /> <br />Mr. Clemons offered the following nominations for the following Boards and <br />Commissions: <br /> <br />Commission of Architectural Review - Port Norfolk/Park View <br /> <br />Willie Gene Roberts to be appointed to fill an unexpired term ending March 31, <br />1998, replacing Kevin T. Christoun. <br /> <br />Supplemental Retirement Board <br /> <br />Otis Jordan to be appointed to fill a four-year term ending September 30, 2001, <br />replacing Carol Roy. <br /> <br />Lloyd Beazley appointed to fill an unexpi red term ending September 30, 2000, <br />replacing ,John Tynch. <br /> <br />Southeastern Vir_~inia Job Trainin_~ Administration Board of Directors <br /> <br />Jimmy R. Spruill appointed to fill an unexpired term ending December 31, 1998, <br />replacing James Gillerlain. <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Clemons, and seconded by Mr. Robinett, to close the <br />nominations, and there being no further nominations, the above nominations <br />were adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br />97 - 330 - Items Submitted by Council Members <br /> <br />Mr. Benn announced that on Thursday, December 11, 1997 at the Holiday Inn <br />in Portsmouth, at 4:30 p.m., the annual meeting of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard <br />will take place. Congressman Norman Sisisky and Captain Tim Schiebs, <br />Commander of the Shipyard, will be the keynote speakers. <br /> <br />· Mr. Pitts spoke on America's Promise to the Alliance of Youth that was <br /> established by the President's summit and is now chaired by General Colin <br /> Powell. As Chairman of TRT, on January 7, along with the support of City <br /> Council and fellow Commissioner Vice Mayor Clemons we will declare to the <br /> media that TRT will become a "Safe Place" site for children. <br />· Mayor Holley stated that it was very important for City Council to attend the <br /> annual meeting Of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard on December 11th to show that <br /> City Council does have a commitment to the Shipyard. <br /> <br />Mayor Holley asked the City Manager to develop a way the City can convey to <br />the businesses action that was taken at tonight's meeting concerning <br />changes to the panhandling laws. <br /> <br />97 - 331 -~ Non-Agenda SpeakerS <br /> <br />1. Dr. Elizabeth Daniels, 1502 Belafonte Drive, expressed concern relating to the <br /> hiring of the police and fire chiefs and other public safety personnel. <br /> <br />Shirley Hines, 1016 Blair Street, invited City Council to attend "The <br />Commonwealth and You...Partners In Prevention on Non-Marital Childbearing <br />Retreat on Friday, December 12, 1997. <br /> <br /> <br />
