Livesay, Jr., City Attorney. <br /> <br />and by the following vote: <br /> <br />The meeting was opened with. prayer by Councilman Walker. <br /> <br />The Mayor welcomedMiss Sumner and her history class from Harry Hunt Jr. High School. <br /> <br /> The City Manager presented the following report.s: <br /> <br /> 60-126 - "I submit the attached ordinance and recommend that it be placed on <br />first reading. This closes the portion of Bainbridge Ave. north of the platted street as straightened and paved <br />between George Washington Highway and Aylwin Road. This s~reet originally curved in this block~ but hasabeen <br />straightened and the curved portion of the right of way is not necessary for use ms a street. This has been ap <br />proved by the Planning Commission." <br /> On motion of.~Lr. ~eiseman, the following ordinance 'was~placed on first reading <br /> <br /> "AN ORDINANCE TO CLOSE A PORTION OF BAINBRIDGE AVEN~E BETWEEN GEORGE WASHINGTON <br /> .HiCu~VAYANDAY~WiNBOADAND~DEDICATERIGHT O~WAY IN LIEU THEREOF" <br /> <br /> Ayes: Baker, Bartlett, B~eedlove, Seward, Smith, ~alker, Weiseman <br /> -Nays: None <br /> <br /> 60-127 - "I submit the attached ordinance and recommend that it be placed on <br />first reading. This ordinancewill tighten requirements for.the purchase of' firearms in the City. It will re - <br />quire the applicant to be photographed, fingerprin~ed,.show good character and ~show a lawful use f~rthe ~eapon. <br />This ~equmres the dealers to keep 'an .accurate register of the number and type of weapons purchased,_ . _ from whom. <br />purchased and date of purchase. <br /> Presently, the approval or disapproval of a ~equest £or~ s permit <br /> ~ have <br />purchase a~. gun is left to the ~iscre~ion .of the Chief of Police. There ~s no.requiremen~ ~or a~ check on . the ap- <br />plicant. This ordinance desiEna~es Chestnut St, between Glasgow*St. and George WashingtonHig*hway as a <br />one-way street. At the present time, Chestnut St. is one way to Gosport~goad. This ordinance ex~ends the <br />one-way stree~ from Gospor~ Road to George Washington Highway. As this section of Chestnut St. is very narrow <br />and parking is allowed on one side, the Police Depmrtment has recon~ended this be made one way." <br /> Motion of ~r. Weiseman ¢o place the following ordinance on'first reading, with <br />the understanding that the City M~anager will study ,the 'mo parking' situation, Mas adopted, and by the following <br /> "AN ORDINANCE TO AblEND SECTION g0-1SE.1 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF <br /> PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, 1951, ASA~ENBED, RELATING TO ONE-WAY TRAFFIC <br /> ON CHESTAWJT STREET, BETWEEN GLASGOW STREET AND GEORGE WASEINGTON <br /> HIGHWAY" <br /> <br /> Ayes.: Baker, Bartlett, BreedloVe, Seward, Smith, Walker, Weiseman <br /> Nays: None <br /> <br /> 60-1~9 - "The Commonwealth's Attorney hasrequested authorization from the <br /> State Compensation Boar~ ~o employ an assistant, also the approval of t~e~salary f?~ thi~posit~.~I~!s~r~- <br /> in the work load as the result of annexation, I recommend the approval of the employment of ,.an assistant Common <br />~wealth Attorueywith a salary of two-thirds of the annual rate of tko Commonwealth Attorney. <br /> Motion of )ir. This covers State funds handled by the Treasure~.
