[ <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Leafy to approve on first reading an appropriation in the amount of <br />~t0=000.00, for said purpose, was adopted, and by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Smith, Atkinson, Dillon, Leafy <br />Nays: Walker. <br /> <br />On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />President. <br /> <br /> City Clerk <br />* "The ~ortsmo~th- Nor~lk County Bar ~sociat~n has recognized the need for, and recommended the creation of <br />an additional judge for the Court of Hustings for the City of Portsmouth, Va. Also, the Judicial Council of <br />Virginia has confirmed the action of our local bar,-and stated that it would recommend the creation of such <br />judgesh~ to the General Assembly of Virginia when it meets in January of 1962. As president of the Ports - <br />mouth Nor~Ik Count~ Bar Association, a~ on behalf of same, Z hereby request yon gentlemen this date to ap - <br />prove and confirm by appropriate resolution the aforementioned proposed judgeship to be created by Legislative <br />action in 1962. A copy of the report adopted by our Bar Association is inclosed. Appreciating your co-operation <br />I remain - signed William H Oast= Jr., PreSident." <br /> <br /> On mouion of Mr. Leafy, the following resolutionwas adopted: <br /> <br /> "WHEREAS, the Portsmouth and Norfolk County Bar Association has moved that an additio hal <br />judge be appointed to serve in the Court of Hustings for the City of Portsmouth, Virginia; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Judicial Council of Virginia has approved and confirmed the request of the <br />Portsmouth and Norfolk County Bar Association and is to recommend the creation of such judgeship to the General <br />Assembly of Virginia when it convenes in January of 1962; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />that it concurs in the opinions expressed by the ~ortsmouth and Norfolk County Bar Associatiom and the ~udicia] <br />Council of Virginia relative to the creation of an additional judgeship for the Court of Hustings for the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, and herewith joins with the aforesaid Bar Association and Council in requesting that <br />such Judgeship be created by the Legislature of Virginia at its 1962 session, with the proviso that such Judge- <br />-ship will be effective as of January 1, 1963; and <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Hon. Mr. Jus- <br />tice Lawrence W. I'Anson of the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia and a member of the Judicial Council, the <br />Honorable WilliamB. Spong, Jr., State Senator, and the Honorable Willard J. Moody and the Honorable Donald H. <br />Sandie, Members of the House of Delegates and the Honorable William H Oast, Jr., President of the Portsmouth <br />and Norfolk County Bar Association, and to the Honorable Vincent L Parker, Jr., President-Elect of the Ports- <br />mouth and Norfolk County Bar Association." <br /> <br /> <br />
