~ay 25, 1965 <br /> <br />At a regular meeting of the City Council held on May 25, 1965, there were present: <br /> <br />R. Irvine Smith, John L. Dillon, George D. Eastes, Burrell R. Johhson, L. L. Knight, <br />W. T. Leary, A. P. Johnson, Jr., City Manager, and M. A. Korb, Jr., City Attorney <br /> <br />The meeting was o~ened with prayer by Mr. Smith. <br /> <br />The Chair welcomed bliss MacDonald, history teacher, from Harry Munt Junior High School <br /> <br />and members of her class. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regualr meeting of May 11, 1965, were read and approved. <br /> <br />The following reports from the City Manager were read: <br /> <br />reading. <br />Street. <br /> <br /> 65-156 - "I submit the attached two ordinances and recommend that they be placed on first <br />The ordinances appropriate $3,500 each for the purchase of property at S56 Jefferson Street and 431 Nelson <br /> <br /> Concerning the purchase of the property a~!431 Nelson Street, since this belongs to an <br />employee of the City, the City Attorney has ruled it will be necessary to also adopt the attached resolution. It is <br />necessary that this be adopted by a unanimous roll-call vote for the City to purchase this parcel. <br /> <br /> The property is within the area proposed for the expansion of the Thomas Jefferson SchoOl <br />Playground, which has been approved by the Recreation Commission and Planning Commission, and is in conform6nce with <br />the Southside Program. <br /> <br />The City Assessor has reviewed this property and concurs in the purchase price." <br /> <br />dissenting vote: <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Knight the £ol~owing ordinance was approved on first reading, without <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $3,500.00 FROM THE GENERAL CAPITAL <br /> IMPROVEMENT FUND FOR THE PURCH;~E OF PROPERTY AT 536 JEFFERSON <br /> STREET" <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Knight, the following ordinance was approved on first reading, without <br /> <br />dissenting vote: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $3,500.00 FROM THE GENERAL CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT FUND <br />FOR TME PURCHASE OF PROPERTY AT 431 NELSON STREET FRO~ JA~S A. BORUM, JR" <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Knight that action on the resolution presented by the Manager be deferred <br />until there is a full attendance at a Council meeting, was adopted without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 65-137 - "I submit the attached ordinance and recommend that it be placed on first <br />reading. This appropriates $37,000 for the oneration of the Youth Corps Program as requested by the Chamber of <br />Cormnerce Committee. <br /> In the 1965 summer program, eighty boFs and fifteen girls will be employed for an eight- <br />week period. This will also include eight supervisors, a Director, and an Associate Director. The pay seale will <br />be on the same basis as last year being $.75 per hour, with a bonus of $.25 per hour paid at the end of the program. <br /> Approximately $1,000 will be expended for tools and equipment. <br /> The program will begin on June 21, 1965." <br /> <br />dissenting vote: <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Eastes, the following ordinance was approved on first reading without <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $37,000.00 FRObl THE GENERAL FUND <br />FOR THE OPERATION OF ThE YOUTH CORPS FORTHE sU~qER OF 19~5" <br /> <br /> 65-138 - "I submit the at~ached ordinance and recommend that it be placed on first <br /> reading. This appropriates $175,000 for the purchase of the Courthouse property at High and Court Streetsfrom the <br /> City of Chesapeake, formerly Norfolk County. <br /> <br /> · The City of Chesapeake has agreed to sell the property for the above price. All their <br /> interests in the property a~ this location will be acquired for this price[ This includes the Courthouse and the~ <br />b~uilding formerly housed the Norfolk County Clerk's office and administrative offices." <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Dillon the following ordinance was approved on first reading without <br /> <br />dissenting vote: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $175,000.00 FROM THE GENERAL CAPITAL <br /> t~IPROVEMENT FUND FOR THE PURCt4~SE OF FOR~IBR NOILFOLK COUNTY COURTHOUSE <br /> PROPERTY FROM THE CITY OF CHESAPEAKE" <br /> <br />reading. <br />1965." <br /> <br /> 65-159 - "Iiaubmit the attached ordinance and recommend that it be placed on first <br />This appropriates funds for the printing of the supplemen% to the City Code of 1961. <br /> The cost of the printing was $3,841.
