June 14th, 1965 <br /> <br />present: <br /> <br />At a called meeting of the City Council, held on June 14th, 1965, there were <br /> <br />2:00 P.M., <br /> <br /> Jack. P. Barnes, John L. Dillon, Burrell R. Johnson, L. L. Knight, A. P. Johnson, Jr. <br /> City Manager, and M. A. Korb, Jrt, City Attorney. <br /> <br /> The following call for the meeting was read: <br /> <br /> "Please attend a called meeting of City Council, in the Council Chamber, at <br />on Monday, June 14th, 1965, to consider the following: <br /> <br /> The proposed designation of Norfolk as a <br />regional office of the Customs Service. <br /> <br /> Explanatory material is enclosed:' <br /> o~ <br /> 65-157 - On motion of Mr. Knight, the following resolution was unanimously adopted: <br /> <br /> "WHEREAS, the Hampton Roads area is a large and important shioping center; <br />and - ~ <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Norfolk is being considered as the location for a <br />regional office under the plan of the reorganization of the Customs Service; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the economic and commercial interests of the area would be best <br />served by having the said regional customs office located in Norfolk, <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, that the City of Norfolk be hereby wholeheartedly endorsed and recommended as the begt locati6n for a <br />regional office of the U. S. Customs Service. ' <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the <br />Secretary of the Treasu~, and the members of Congress representing this area." <br /> <br />The City Clerk was requested to send a copy of the resolution to the following: <br /> <br /> Honorable C. Douglas Dillon, Secretary of the Treasury <br /> Honorable A. Willis Robertson, Member of Senate <br /> Honorable Harry F. Byrd, Member of Senate <br /> Honorable Porter Hardy, Jr., Congressman, Second District <br /> Honorable Thomas N. Douching, Congressman, First District <br /> Virginia State Ports Authority <br /> Norfolk Chamber of Commerce <br /> Portsmouth Port and Industrial Authority <br /> Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce <br /> <br />adjourned. <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
