Korb, City <br />Attorney <br /> <br />The meeting was opened With prayer by Mr. Eastes. <br /> <br />Hinutes of regular meeting held on June 8th, 1965 were read and approved. <br /> <br />Minutes of called meeting of June 14th, 1965 were read and approved7 <br />65-144- The following hearing on zoning petitions was held: <br /> <br /> Petition Z 65-10 - Attorney .Louis Brenner <br /> [~. Brenner spoke. <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Barnes to refer to a Conference of Council, was adopted, <br /> <br />without dissenting vote. <br /> <br />Petition Z 65-14- DorseY A. Lewter <br /> <br />No one spoke in regard to the petition. <br /> <br /> Motion df Mr. Johnson to concur in the recommendation of the Planning <br />Commission and. to place the following ordinance on first reading, was adopted, without dissenting vote: <br /> <br />"ZONING ;3~END).~NT ORDINANCE Z 65-14" <br /> <br />The following reports from the City b~nager were read: <br /> <br />65-158 - "I S~emit the attached resolution and recommend its adoption. <br /> <br /> This is a resolution .of appreciation to Mr. A. J. Mapp, Superintendent <br />of the Portsmouth Public Schools, for his services to the City." <br /> <br />On motion of Mr.. Knight, the following resolution was unanimously adopted: <br /> <br /> "~CHEREAS, A. J. Mapp will retire as the Superintendent of the Portsmouth <br />Public School System at the end of this month; and - <br /> <br /> i~HEREAS, A. J. Mapp has devoted more than forty-five years of his life <br />to public service in the field of education; and <br /> <br /> WHEILEAS, the wise and efficient leadership of A. J. Mapp as Superintendent <br />of the Portmmouth Public Schools for the past fifteen years has been a major factor in the expansion and <br />improvements of the school system of this City. <br /> <br /> NOW, ~tERHFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouih, <br />Virginia, that the appreciation of the citizens of this City for the long and valuable service rendered by <br />A, J. ~hppbe expressed and conveyed to him upon the occasion of his retirement as Superintendent. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of these resolutions be spread upon <br />the minutes of the City Council, and a copy be presented to the said A. J'. Mapp as a token of the esteem in <br />which he is held by the people of this C. ity." <br /> <br /> 65-159 ,- "I submit the attached o~dinance and recommend that it be pla~ed on first <br />reading. This appropriates $12,50Ofor the purchase of property. <br /> <br /> This is for two parcels of property of Fayette Street for the expansion <br />of the playground at the Thomas Jefferson School. <br /> <br />This is in conformance with the Southside Program. <br /> <br />The other property is on Carolina Avenue in Pinners Point." <br /> <br />On ~otion of Mr. Dillon, the following ordinance was approved on first reading, <br /> <br />with6ut dissenting vote: <br /> <br />"AN ORDIN~qCE TO APPROPRIATE $12,500.00 FROM T}~ <br />GENERAL C/%PlTAL Ib~ROVEMH~ FUND FOR/}{E PURCHASE <br />OF PROPERTY AT 105-107 CAROLINA AVENUE AND SSI-SSS <br />FAYETTE STREET" <br /> <br /> 65-160 -"I submit the attached option from the State Highway Department and <br />recommend that the proper City Officials be authorized to sign. <br /> This permanent easement requested by the Highway Department covers 0.26 <br />of an acre along Route 58 near Speights Run. <br /> The consideration is $318 and is the same price for llke land in the <br />same area. This dispc$ition will not be detrimental to the operation o~ the Water Department. <br /> The Hig~hway Department desires this property for the widening of Route S8." <br /> <br /> <br />
