August 25, 1966 <br /> <br />A t a regular meeting of the City Council, held-on August 23, 1966, there were present: <br /> <br /> R. Irvine Smith, Jack P. Barnesa_George D. Eastes, Burrell R. Johnson, Isaac W. King, <br /> L. L. Knight, W. T. Leery, A% P.-Jobalson, Jr.,.City Manager, and M. A. Kerb, Jr., City Attorney. <br /> <br /> The meeting was opened with prayer by Mr. Johnson. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular meeting held,~an August 9th, 1966, were read and approved. <br />The following reports from the City Manager were read~: <br /> <br /> 66-128 - "I submit the attached ordinance and recommend that it be placed on first reading. <br />This ordinance appropriates $50,000 for the construction of Cherokee Road. <br /> <br /> This will require storm drainage construction as well as curbing and guttering, <br />street paving and grading to realign this street between City Park Avenue and Elmhurst Lane. The <br />estimated cost of the street work is approximately $$S,000. <br /> <br /> Bids have been received for storm drainage work, and A. G. Pinkston Company was <br />the low bidder in the amount of $14,155.30. ! recommend that the contract for the storm drainage <br />work be awarded this firm." <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Johnson, the following ordinance was approved 05 first reading, without <br />dissenting vote: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $50,000.00 PROM THE GENERAL CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT FUND <br />FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF CHEROKEE ROAD" <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Eastes, the s~orm drainage contract was awarded to A. G. Pinkston Company, <br />the low bidder, .without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 66-129 - "t submit the attached ordinance and recommend that it be placed on first reading. <br />This appropriates $4,000 for the installation of traffic signals at Effingham and A Streets. <br /> <br /> ue tq the underground wiring in this area, it was necessary to purchase special <br />poles for the instaltatio~ of these signals. This appropriation covers the installation of the poles <br />and the necessary underground duct work to operate the signals. <br /> <br /> The poles and traffic signals have been received, and we are now prepared to begin <br />the installation of same." <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr, Knight, the following ordinance was approved on first reading, without <br />dissenting vo~e: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $4,00Q.~0 FROM THE GENERAL CRPITAL <br /> IMPROVEMENT FUND FOR THE INSTALLATION OF A TRAFFIC LIGHT AT THE <br /> INTBRSECTION OF EFFINGHAM AND A STREETS" <br /> <br />66-150 - "I submit the attached ordinance and recommend that it be placed on first reading. <br /> <br /> This appropriates $6,000 for the purchase of property at 120 Seaboard Avenue and <br />Lots No. 85 and 86 on Pinners Avenue from Mr. ~llllam L. Boo,he. <br /> <br /> The property is to be used in connection with th~ development of the marine <br />terminal at Pinners Point." <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Barnes, the following ordinance was approved on first reading, without <br />dissenting vote: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINaNCE TO APPROPRIATE $6,000.00 FROM THE GENERAL CAPITAL <br /> IMPROVEMENT FUND FOR THE PURCHASE O~ PROPERTY AT 120 SEABOARD AVENUE" <br /> <br /> 66-151 - "I submit the attached ordinance and recommend that it be placed on first reading. <br />This authorizes the closing of a portion of Detroit Street, where the Belt Line Railroad has an <br />overhead crossing. <br /> <br />The Rialroad proposes to fill this area to el,iminate the trestle, due to its <br /> <br />condition. <br /> <br />The closing of the street has been requested by the Belt Line and the adjoining <br /> <br />property owners. <br /> <br /> The Planning Commission has approved the closing and a copy of the report of the <br />viewers is attached hereto." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Eastes to suspend rules to hear from Mr. Schikevitz. <br /> <br />Mr. Schikevitz spoke regarding the effect the closing of the street would have on his business. <br /> <br /> <br />
