December 1S, 1966 <br /> <br /> 66-S03 - The following letter from Jerry L. Gwaltney, Advisor, Young Citizens <br />Council, was read: <br /> <br /> -"Th~ Portsmouth Young Citizens Council respectfully requests permission <br />to speak to the City Council at its meeting on December 15, 1966 to breif the council <br />members on the purposes and goals of the Young Citizens Council. <br /> We are hopeful that we will receive the endorsement End blessings of <br />the Portsmouth City Council. <br /> Your cooperation in arranging this meeting will be greatly appreciated." <br /> <br /> Motion of MrL Knight to suspend the rules to hear from Mr. Gwaltney was adopted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Gwaltney presented James Crowe, who spoke regarding the activities and aims of <br />the Young Citizens Council. <br /> <br /> Idotion of Mr. Johnson that the Council endorse the program of the Council and <br />pledge them their full support, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 66-304 - The following letter from William B. Spong, Jr. was read: <br /> <br /> "I shall take up my duties in Washington on January 3, and, <br />therefore, must curtail many of my activities in this area. <br /> It is with real~ regrettthat I submil to you and the members of the Portsmouth <br />City Council my resignation as one of Portsmouth's representativesz;on the Hampton Roads <br />Committee on Area-wide Cooperation. I do want to thank you and the Council for honoring <br />me~ith this appointment, <br /> As you know, I have served ever since the inception of the Committee <br />and as its chairman in 1964. This service and experience has been'~rewarding to me." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr, Barnes that the resignation be acce~ted with regret and that a letter <br />be forwarded Mr. Spong thanking him for his services on the Committee and that the vacancy <br />be referred to a conference, was adopted, without ~issenting vote. <br /> <br />66-505 - The following letter from 5L L. Bailey was read: <br /> <br /> "Permission is requested to appear at your next scheduled meeting <br />to be held Tuesday, December !3, 1966, to speak and ~resent petitions concerning <br />Olive Branch Cemetery." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Knight that the rules he suspended to hear from Mr. Bailey. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Eastes that the petitioners be answered, and that the matter be <br />referred to a conference of Council, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />Approved - <br /> <br />President <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
