<br />our guests of honor at the Massing of the Colors and Memorial Service to be conducted by the Norfolk Chapter
<br />of the Military Order of the World Wars on Smnday, June 2, 1968. The place is the Amphitheatre, Norfolk-
<br />Botanical Gardens, and the time 2:30

<br />The Honorable ThomasN. Downing will be the principal speaker.
<br />
<br /> It is anticipated that all major military commands, as well as civic and,.oatriotic organization, will be
<br />represented at this gathering. There will be a reception in the Chesaweake Room at N. O. B. Commissioned
<br />Officers Open Mess at S:00 P.M,, to which each of you and your soouses'are cordially invited.

<br /> Never before has this memorial to those who gave t~eir lives in defense of our democratic way of life been
<br />more in order. The occasion is also a tribute to our Flag, which leads the way to freedom for all those who

<br />68-177 - .l~e f~21owing letter from the Junior Woman's Club was read:

<br /> "The Junior Woman's Club of Portsmouth would ~OSt sincerely am~reciate your efforts toward the completion
<br />of the International Friendshin Zoo. We feel the city of Portsmouth has ~ushed the Zoo in the background long
<br />enough and it is time definite progress was made towards its comnletion.
<br />
<br /> It is extremely embarassing to our organization when the citizens of Portsmouth ask us what has hannened
<br />to the $10,000.00 we raised to begin the Zoo and why it has gev~rbeen comoleted. -
<br />
<br /> Ue hope our efforts towards the Zoo have not been in vain and we hone, too, that it will be not too far
<br />in the future that our children and visitors to our fair city can enjoy ~ visit to Portsmouth's International
<br />Friendship Zoo.

<br /> 68-178 - The following letter from Frank H. Keeling, Priesident, Lee Ward Civic League.was r~ad:
<br /> "I am requesting permission to appear before the City COuncil on May 28, 1968."
<br /> "In accordance with the request contained in your tette~ of May 25, 1968 concerning the subject matter
<br />on which I wish to speak when appearing before the City Counicil, please be advised that the following items
<br />are to be discussed:

<br />a. Curbs and gutters
<br />b. Enforcing minimu~n housing code
<br />c. Cleaning and maintenance of drainage ditches."

<br /> Motion ~fMr. Barnes to refer to the City Manager for investigation and action, was adopted, without
<br />dissenting vote.
<br />
<br /> 68-179 - Notice from the City Clerk that the term of Clinton O. Crawford, on the Parking Authority,
<br />expired as of May 1, 1968, was read:
<br />
<br /> "Please be advised that the term on the Parking Authority of Mr. Clinton O. Crawford has expired as of
<br />May I, 1968."
<br />
<br />Motion of Mr. Barnes to go into the election of a member to the Parking Authori%y was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. Barnes that Mr. Crawford be elected to succeed himself on the Parking Authority for a five
<br />year term, expiring May 1, 1973 was adopted, without dissenting vote.

<br />68-180 - The following letter from the Director of Planning was read:
<br />
<br /> "At its regular monthly meeting on May 14, 1968, the City Planning Commission resolved to recommend release
<br />and/or vacation of certain easements as requested by Attorney Donald C. Kilgore on behalf of Miss Nancy Wheeler
<br />and Mr. Babe Kavadias on nroperty knmm as 5501 North Armistead Drive on the "Plat of North Truxton". Present
<br />at the Plmnning Commission meeting was City Attorney M. A. KOrb who ~resented and discussed at length findings
<br />of our Department of Public Works which had been asked to research the subject. It is my understanding at the
<br />time of this writing that the City Attorney has prepared an ordinance describing in detail the exact lo~ation
<br />and dimension of the easements to be released and/om vacated, and the Buroose of this communication is to
<br />indicate that the Planning Com~mission has reviewed the matter and recommends adoDtion of this ordimmmce."
