Se tember22 1998 <br /> <br />Ayes: Benn, Griffin, Moody, Pitts, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />98 - 229 Adoption of a resolution approving the design of the Martin Luther King <br /> Freeway and approval for the Virginia Department of Transportation <br /> (VDOT) to purchase the required right-of-way. <br /> <br />Recommendation_: <br /> <br />Adoption of a resolution approving the design of the Martin Luther King <br />Freeway and approval for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) <br />to purchase the required right-of-way. <br /> <br />Put_.: ose and Need: <br /> <br />· VDOT is designing plans for an elevated four lane interstate connection <br /> between Martin Luther King Freeway and 1-264. <br /> <br />· VDOT hosteda Public Hearing on the plans for this project on June 24, 1998. <br /> (See attached memorandum) <br /> <br />Financial Impact: <br /> <br />· No City funds are required for this project. <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Griffin, and seconded by Mr. Benn, to adopt the following <br />resolution, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br /> "RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF <br />TRANSPORTATION'S PROJECT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MARTIN <br />LUTHER KING FREEWAY EXTENSION iN THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, <br />VIRGINIA, APPROVING THE PROPOSED LOCATION AND DESIGN FEATURES <br />OF THE SAID INTERCHANGE, REQUESTING THE COMMONWEALTH OF <br />VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO ACQUIRE ALL NECESSARY <br />RIGHT-OF-WAY, AND AUTHORIZING THE EXECUTION OF ALL NECESSARY <br />UTILITY AGREEMENTS. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Transportation is proceeding with <br />the Martin Luther King Freeway Extension and the City of Portsmouth is <br />supporting the implementation of this improvement, and; <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, a Design Public Hearing was held for the purpose of <br />presenting plans to and receiving comments from the public, and; <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, representatives from the City of Portsmouth were present and <br />participated in said hearing, and; <br /> <br /> NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, that it supports the Virginia Department of <br />Transportation's project for the improvement of the Martin Luther King Freeway <br />Extension, a distance of approximately 0.7 miles in length and designated as <br />Project No. 0058-124-F04-PE-101, RW-201, C-501; and, <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia hereby approves the major design features of the Martin Luther King <br />Freeway as identified at the public hearing on June 24, 1998 with the minor <br />design changes as a result therefore, and; <br /> <br /> <br />
