This appropriates <br />$30,000.00 to establish a Traffic Accident Investigation Program. <br /> <br /> The City has been awarded a 50% matching grant of $65,093.00 from the State under the Federal Highway <br />Safety Prosram. The City is already expending sufficient funds to support its 50% cost of the program; there- <br />fore this appropriation will be reimbursed from the Federal funds received. <br /> <br /> The purpose of this project is to provide for the reduction of death, personal injury and property damage. <br />To accomplish this reduction in accidents there will be established a specially trained unit of accident in- <br />vestigators within the Police Department. They will be skilled in their job and properly equipped and will <br />thereby yield mor~ accurate, standardized information and more efficient handling of an amcident situation. <br />Their reports will be thoroughly researched by a trained, full-time traffic engineer whose job will be to recog- <br />nize the causes and correct them." <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Hastes, the following ordinance was approved on first reading,, without dissenting vote: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINAHCE TO APPROPRIATE $30,000.00 FROM THE GENERAL FUND FOR THE TRAFFICE ACCIDENT <br />INVESTIGATION PROGRAM OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH." <br /> <br /> 70-58 - "I submit the attached ordinance and recommend it be placed on first reading. This closes a <br />portion of Fitzgerald Street in the vicinity of the Truxton Elementary School. This closure has been re- <br />quested by the School Board and a report of the viewers is attached hereto." <br /> <br />On motion o~ Mr. King, the following ordinance was approved on first reading, without dissenting vote: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINA~NCE TO CLOSE A PORTION OF FITZGERALD STREET." <br /> <br /> 70-59 - "I submit Zhe attached resolution and recommend its adoption. This designates the Crawford Street <br />Connector as a limited access facility between Washington Street and Crawford Street. This resolution is re- <br />quired by the Highway Department.
