<br /> 71-19 - The following resolution, requested at the last meeting of Council, was mead. a~d on motion of
<br />Mr. Smith (R), was adopted, without dissenting vote:

<br /> "RESOLUTION COPI~NDING b~ARSHALL D. O~{ENS FOR TNE RENOVATION OF THE SENIOR CITIZENS CENTER
<br />
<br /> 'A~EREAS, the Senior Citizens Center was in need of renovation; and
<br />
<br /> ~ERE~S, Marshall D. ~ens personally devoted many hours of labor to making repairs and improvements
<br />to the Senior Citizens Center; and
<br />
<br /> I~{EREAS, the said Center is much improved as a result of the efforts of ~arshall D. Wens;
<br />
<br /> NOW, THEREFOPJ], BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that it hereby commends
<br />Marshall D. Owens for his efforts expended in renovating the Senior Citizens Center.
<br />
<br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be pmesented to the said Marshall D. ~ens."

<br /> 70-524 - Motion of Mr. Smith (R) to go into the election of a member to the Portsmouth Port and Industrial
<br />Commission was adopted, '

<br />1975.~r. Smith [I) nominated George D. Pastes to a five year term on the Commission, expiring on December
<br />
<br /> b~otion of ~4r. Smith (R) to close nominations was adopted.

<br /> Vote being taken, Mr. Eastes was elected a member of the Portsmouth Port and Industrial Commission for

<br />- NEW BUSINESS
<br />
<br /> 71-5S - The following letter from N. J. Brown, Jr. was read:
<br />
<br /> "Please accept my resignation as a member of the Naval Shipyard Museum Board effective as of this date."
<br />
<br /> , On motion of Mr. Turner, the resignation was accepted with regret and with thanks for Mr. Brown's
<br />services on the Museum Board; the vacancy to be referred to a conference of Council.
<br />
<br /> 7R~6 - The following resolution was t~l~esented, and on motion of Mr. Turner, was adopted, without dissent-
<br />ing vote:

<br /> "A RESOLUTION COP~ENDING MISS CAROLINE GORT FOR HER SERVICES TO TNE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Miss Caroline Gott will retire as City Clerk for the City of Portsmouth at the end of this
<br /> month, after having served as such fd~ twelve years; and
<br />
<br /> ~{EREAS, the said Caroline Gort has been a devoted and loyal public servant; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the citizens of Portsmouth are deeply indebted to Miss Gott for the fine and efficient way
<br />in which she has always striven to keep Portsmouth City g~vernment close to the people;
<br />
<br /> N~V, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the appreciation
<br />of the citizens of this City for the long and faithful service rendered by Miss ~aroline Gott to the City and
<br />to her fellow citizens be expressed and hereby conveyed to her.
<br />
<br /> BE IT FUR~-IER RESOL%~D that a copy of this resolution be presented to the said Caroline Gott as a token
<br />of the esteem in which she is held by the people of this City."

<br /> ~1-37 - The b~ayor presented a matter regarding the sale of drug syringes; stating that after investigation,
<br />ii was found that ~s;e articles could be purd]ased without prescription for the amount of twelve cents.
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. Turner to suspend the rules to hear Mrs. Bevelry McNeal, who requested that the Council take
<br />some action to correct this situation.
