FusSY,Commissioner, Department of <br />Highways, was read: <br /> <br /> "Thank you very much for sending me a copy of the resolution adopted by the City Council <br />of Portsmouth on July 25, 1972, regarding the Hodges Ferry Bridge. <br /> <br /> I am forwarding this resolution to our Urban Engineer, Mr. L. O. Bolton, with the request <br />that this matter be reviewed with the City of portsmouth and the ~City of ChesaPeake and <br />studies made to determine the feasibility of financing and design." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Smith and seconded by Mr. Johnson, to be received as information, was <br />adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Holley, Johnson, King, SMith, Wentz <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />- NEW BUSINESS <br /> <br /> 72-340 ~ The following letter received from J.P.C. Hanbury, Chairman, Museum and Fine ' <br />Arts Commissi'on, was read: <br /> <br /> !'Please adcept the appreciation of the Museum and Fine Arts Commission for arranging <br />our recent conference with the members of Council to discuss the proposed resolution con- <br />cerning the Court House. As suggested by Council we have drafted an appropriate resolution <br />which we would hope can be passed at the~earliest convenient date. <br /> <br />I am sure we will b~d~iscussing the matter in greater detail as time goes on." <br /> <br /> Resolution attached: <br /> <br /> "WHEREAS, the 1846 Court House in the City of Portsmouth has historic significance <br />well as outstanding merit as a distinguished example of early public architecture and <br /> <br />as <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the surrounding park-like setting is of particular enhancement to the City of <br />R6wtsm6Ut~as.~i~an?~mportant civic design element and <br /> <br /> B~EREAS, the building and site are included in the State and Federal Registry of Historic <br />Structures, <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED that in order to preserve this tangible reminder of the past for the future <br />enjoyment of the Citizens of Portsmouth, the City Council of this City dedicates these <br />municipal properties at Court and High Street for the establishment of a Cul~ural and Fine <br />Arts Center and the development of a permanent park. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that immediate steps be taken to protect the building from further <br />deterioration to include a watertight roof and exterior waterproofing of the structure as may <br />be required. <br /> <br /> The Council directs the City Manager together with the Museum and Fine ~ts Commiission <br />of the City of Portsmouth to investigate the program and accompanying cost~ incidental to the <br />conversion of the 1846 Court House into a Cultural and Fine Arts Center." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Johnson and seconded by Mr~ Smith, the matter be referred to City Council <br />~aeting on August 22, 1972, was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Holley, Johnson, King, Smith, Wentz <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> 72-341 - The following letter received from Ms. Viola Jones, 552 Virginia Avenue, was <br />read: <br /> <br /> "I am writing this note to see if there is anything you can do about getting some of this <br />growth of b~shes and weeds cut on Virginia Avenue at the Coast Line Railroad tracks. <br /> <br /> <br />
