Mr. Barnes, you are aware of this fact. Mr. Hunter Hux has informed you by~elephone.
We have also talke~ to Mr. Hawkins, head of Public Works and Mr. Ray Boggs, supervisor of
sewer maintenance. These men have offered us everythiBg from condolences to lime and a
powdered like perfumeto keep us happy.

We think you will agree it is a ridiculous situation and we have had it in more ways tha~
one. Had we had curbing and storm drains, it would have saved our grass and concern for our
small children's health, but even at best, the stink was deplorable and our pride cannot be
repaired. If it were not for the smelly remains of this past week, it would be near impossible
to believe that sewage was pumped into a street of Portsmouth, Virginia.

Mr. Barnes, we need help! We hope you will be the one to present our situation to the
City Manager. We don't feel we are asking for a great deal. After all, the street is only
long enough to accommodate four homes, 2 on each side of the street.

Some of the high weeds belong to the city. Such negligence by us would be frowned upon."
