288 <br /> <br />M"¥ lJ lq74 <br /> <br /> The following resolution was prepared: <br /> <br /> "A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE STRENUOUS OPPOSITION OF TF~ COUNCIL OF TIM <br /> CITY OF PORTSMOUTH TO THE PROPOSED WESTWARD EXPANSION OF THE CRANEY ISLAND <br /> LAND FILL. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Federal and State.°fficials have proposed a substantial westward expansion <br />of the Craney Island Land Fill; and <br /> W~ER~AS, such an expansion would seriously degrade the property values and <br />desirability of adjacent neighborhoods; and <br /> WHEREAS, the proposed enlargement of the land fill area would exacerbate Portsmouth': <br />existing tax base difficulties and create numerous other social and economic problems. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />that this body firmly and unequmvocally expresses its strong and continuing opposition <br />to any expansion of the Craney Island Land Fill, since such an expansion ms certain <br />to have disastrous consequences for the City of Portsmouth; and <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that appropriate <br />earnestly requested to thoroughly review all <br />giving full consideration to the legitimate <br />and <br /> <br />Federal and State officials are hereby <br />plans for such proposed expansion, <br />interests of the City of Portsmouth; <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Federal and State officials are requested to repeal <br />and withdraw any previous approval that may have been granted to such project; and <br /> <br /> BE IT EURT~ER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and he hereby is, directed to <br />forward certlfi%'J'copies of this resolution to all cognizant public officials." <br /> <br /> 74m~99::--.The:.foitowing request to speak was received from George R. Walker, 1749 <br />Spratley Street: <br /> <br /> "Pursuant to Council Gag Rules 2-15.1 and 2-2J, it is requested that my name be plac <br />on the agenda of the subject meeting of the Portsmouth City Council (May 14, 1974), to <br />address the 1974-7S Budget Guide as effected by the May 7, 1974 Councilmanic Election." <br /> <br />Mr. Walker spoke. <br /> <br /> 74-200 - <br />an executive <br />pose of: <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. <br />session prior <br /> <br />Smith and seconded by Mr. Johnson, that the Council meet in <br />to the next regularly scheduled Council meeting for the put- <br /> <br />(1) Discussing appointments to Boards and Commissions; <br />(2) Discussing the disposition of City property; <br />(3) Consultation with Counsel pertaining to legal matters; <br /> <br />was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: <br />Nays: <br /> <br />Early, Johnson, King, Smith, Wentz, Barnes <br />Holley <br /> <br /> 74-201 Motion of Mr. <br />for the fiscal year '74-'75 <br /> 73-'74, was adopted by unanimous <br /> <br />Early and seconded by Mr. King, that the school budget <br />be no less than the amount approved for the fiscal year <br /> <br />vote. <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Johnson and seconded by Mr. <br /> <br />APPROVED - <br /> <br />Holley, <br /> <br />the meeting adjourned at 12:10 ~.m <br /> City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
