R -17 -15 <br />A RESOLUTION DECLARING THAT THE FULL TIME PARAMEDIC POSITIONS OF <br />THE EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES DIVISION OF THE PORTSMOUTH <br />DEPARTMENT OF FIRE, RESCUE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES ARE AN <br />INTEGRAL PART OF THE OFFICIAL SAFETY PROGRAM OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA WITHIN THE MEANING OF THE VIRGINIA LINE OF <br />DUTY ACT. <br />WHEREAS, the Virginia Line of Duty Act ( §§ 9.1400, et seq. of the Code of Virginia <br />of 1950, as amended) (the "Act ") provides that members of emergency medical services agencies <br />that have been recognized by a resolution of the governing body of any city of the <br />Commonwealth as an integral part of the official safety program of such city shall be eligible for <br />benefits under the Act; and <br />WHEREAS, the Emergency Medical Services Division of the Portsmouth Department of <br />Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services includes the following full time paramedic positions: EMS <br />Paramedic, EMS Supervisor, EMS Trainer, EMS Clinical Care Coordinator, and EMS Manager; <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia that effective July 1, 2017 the full time paramedic positions of the Emergency Medical <br />Services Division of the Portsmouth Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services <br />(including the positions specifically identified in this Resolution and new full time paramedic <br />positions which may be established from time to time) are recognized as, and declared to be, an <br />integral part of the official safety program of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia within the <br />meaning of the Act. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Manager and her designees are authorized <br />and directed to forward a copy of this Resolution to the appropriate agency or agencies of the <br />Commonwealth of Virginia and to take such other actions as may be necessary or desirable to <br />ensure that the full time paramedic positions are eligible for benefits under the Act. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution shall take effect as of July 1, 2017. <br />9, 2017 ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia at a meeting held on May <br />Teste: <br />City Clerk <br />
